Do backplates really help cooling ?

So I was looking at buying a backplate for my GPU. In the past I've never really thought about it I just always thought backplates where made to make the GPU cooler

But I notice on Razor GTX Titan / 780 / 770 Backplate

it says "Backplate for reference design GTX Titan,GTX780 and GTX770 cards The backplate helps cool the memory on the back of the card." Have backplates always done this ? Does cooling the memory on the back of the card actually effect performance at all ?

Still going to buy one to make the card look cooler :p but would still be nice to know :)

They do help with cooling the memory if you've got chips on the back of the card, but not by anything meaningful. They're more for aesthetics than anything else, my opinion is all cards should have them fitted :D Love me a backplate.

Back plates are great for cards with highly overclocked memory on the back of the pcb. Also keep the card from bending under its own weight. Which will make sure a full cover block will make contact correctly all the time.

My 7990's backplate gets too hot to touch when at 1800mhz with a small voltage increase. Without it I dred to think how hot them chips would be getting.

Im planing on adding some painted copper heatsinks to the back plate soon to help cool the memory, it may not need it but if ut burns to touch thrn its simply too hot.
