Do bookshelf speakers have to be on a stand?

Those stands will work well, you have the foam under the speakers that also helps.

Your speakers and stands look very good and fit in that area.
Thanks. They were initially stools which I converted to speaker stands. The isolation foam is pretty firm to not lose speaker accuracy. They're slightly tilted up too..

They going soon as they're not baby friendly unfortunately.

Soft foam will cause micro rocking. You don't want the speaker to move forwards and backwards.

I see where your coming from. On my desk stands I'm using isolation foam that is branded Neewer and it improved sound. I do run my speakers sideways with tweeters on the outside and almost entire side of speakers is sitting on foam, they appear very stable.

Ah yes, the “can’t have anything nice” stage. Managed to get away without tweeters being pushed in with our first, but our youngest seems drawn to my floor standers like some sort of beacon. One day the nice things will return!

Haha true. Seems a long time way though. I'm confined to my headphones now. My beloved SVS sub is already gone. Sad panda.

The last set of stands I had weighed approx 30kg (each) and were full of dry sand, so were basically dead.
What kind of cabinet do you have that’s more solid?
Well I only mentioned my own stands which when full of sand would be about 7kg each. But this particular unit has a top weighing somewhere around 70kg plus what's fixed on top & underneath it.
By no means a typical comparison but the point is it's completely situation dependent and the general notion that stands are required is daft.

Yes to stands all the way. I made my own.

These look great. I found some nice wooden stands for my surrounds but stylish options are quite limited.

I used to have mine on the unit, but moved them to stands and I personally think they sound better. I bought the Atacama Moseco 10 stands from Peter Tyson. Cables route down the back tube (although I had to elongate the holes for bi-wire). Then filled the front tube up with those Atabite things. :)

I guess the answer is you don't have to have them on stands no, they will work whereever and if that's all you've heard they will sound fine. It's just they can and will sound better with proper positioning and stands, it just depends how much that is worth to you with the effort/cost ratio.

I've got the Atacama Moseco XL600 filled with atabites too, they weigh a ton! :)

At my old place on a concrete floor the spikes were fine, but in my new room I've got a floating wooden floor and coupling the stands to that with spikes was casuing real issues! So looking around at isolation solutions and came across an amazing product from the USA here, called Herbies Gliders https://herbiesaudiolab.com/products/threaded-stud-glider?variant=12651505745975

Since the equivalent products would be Isoaccoustics or Townshend, these are giving an equivalent performance for a fraction of the price tag.
