Do Bus's Control Traffic lights?

I was on a bus the other day and we were coming upto some traffic lights which had gone from amber to red. I was a little worried as the bus didn't even attempt to slow down but when we got to the traffic lights the red light turned into a Green arrow ( in the top light ) ... So do bus's have a override button or do traffic lights have a sensor etc?

Perhaps the driver does the route 20 times per day and just knows that after the red, the sequence is then a green arrow? :)

One day they will change the lights sequence and a bus full of grannies going to sewing club will meet a cruel end.

Pretty sure the one's in/around Leeds have some sort of pre-emption device fitted to the bus lane traffic lights that would be triggered by the buses arrival/proximity to enable that light to change to green and turn the normal vehicle traffic light to red.

I'm sure I heard that some traffic lights can sense busses?

I heard that Honda S2000s are powered by unicorn farts.....

The driver will just know the sequence as they'll do the route loads. I often see them barrelling through red lights so to be honest, OP's situation isn't a big deal at all. :D

As far as I know they're on timers or pressure switches. Sometimes a combination of the two depending on time of day to maintain a steaady flow. There's nothing that says "oh, that's a bus". Only "oh, that's a vehicle".

There are public transport priority systems which detect the presence of approaching buses and change the light to green if safe to do so. This was also done for Olympic chiefs when travelling through London during the 2012 Olympics:

Oh and S2000s ARE powered by Unicorn farts..no lie! :)

Possibly yeh. Its just that it was a busy junction with cars waiting and that ive never seen a green arrow appear in the red light part as opposed to at the bottom of the traffic light.

Now who looks stupid? :)

Personally I've been going through one light for 5 years damn near every day and I know for a fact if you can see it's red it will be green by the time you reach it if you keep your foot down. Never failed.

If you know the routes you know the lights.

There are often weight mats in or near traffic lights, especially those that are bus lane designated, or bus only roads. Simply, a heavy vehicle there will set the lights to change.

Weight mats work well until you get to a set near me that only change when this is triggered and stay red otherwise.... You get a tadger that stops well before the line and then the lights never change :(

You can see the "cut-out" of the sensor with the black tar lines marking it out but some people stay behind it and we are all screwed :/
