Do conroe batches really matter?

I was wondering if the batch of a processor (in this case Core2Duo) really makes that much difference to overclocking? I heard somewhere that the reason someone couldn't overclock as well as the next was because of this, can anyone put my mind at ease?

it does but only at about 3.4ghz+ on the e6300 e6400 and about 3.6+ on the e6600 etc. So its a bit pointless unless you need to reach 4.5ghz or some thing stupid.

damn, now what am i going to do with this canister of liquid nitrogen? :(

j/k :p

Thanks for the quick response :)

The later week the chip the better chances of getting a higher clock are as the yield gets slightly better. But the intel chips are already very good so the differences are minimal and there are always the exceptions to that rule.

One thing that IS prevailent is that 'B' chips seem to clock a lot better than 'A' ones.

i guess there's no way a customer can choose to buy either an 'A' or 'B'?

Unless you find somewhere you can physically pick your own CPU then no.
As mentioned though, later weeks seem to clock much better than the first batches. Week 28's are awsome clockers, both myself and my brother have week 28 6600 "A" stepping CPU's. Both will run 4.7ghz under dry Ice Pi1m stable.

Not quite sure on the "B" stepping CPU's, some seem to clock better than A's and others don't.

As always though its pretty mich luck of the draw :)

the only batch i would hunter for is the ES batch ( engineering sample!). they totally rock. other than that, i wouldnt worry much.

Retail CPU's clock better than ES's in most cases. There are of course excpetions. Wouldn't go out looking for an ES cpu though unless its a known good clocker.

Week 29A's 6600's are doing really well. My little monster will do 3.6 at default voltage and over 4G's. I also have a week 29B and Week 31A that are pretty good. Its not just the CPU that determins a good OC. Motherboards vary too from batch to batch and a poor one will limit your OC.

At the end of the day is down to luck.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do you decypher the batch# code printed on the box to meaningful year/week/batch numbers?
