Do D-SLR's wear out?

Might be a daft question but I've had lots of use out of my 40D but it seems to be slower and producing really disappointing images despite the good light that we've been having recently.

My 50D seems to react much, much quicker when tested with the same lenses.

The button itself? If it is I think I'm reaching the end of it, it's just so slow to react.

It's not broken, it's just like I'll compose a shot, press the shutter and theres nothing. Sometimes it's just plain slow too.

I've just managed to find the number of clicks on my 40D. In a smidgen over two years I taken 73580 shots!

So you don't do it for reproduction like scanning then? I'm sat here doing a load of old newspaper cuttings (scanning) and I wish there was an easier way.....
