I assume you told her off at the time she didn't though? Which is why she still knew.
Late answer
I told her off that day when I got in and saw the mess, so she could have done it 8 hours earlier and knew what she'd done.
Like I said earlier, we'd get in and she would be looking down at the floor while lifting one eye up knowing she was going to get a telling off for something new she'd done.
And we blame ourselves for all the things that happened, it was back in the early 80s and shouldn't have left a dog alone all day so never had another one.
