Do expensive soundcards really make a difference?

Proud owner of an Essence STX after owning a DGX and I saw a massive difference

Agreed. I saw that also. The difference in size is what gave the game away.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I knew what you were getting at. :p

I'm considering swapping my STX for a wedge of cheese and trying some blind (drunk) listening tests.

I'm going to try that. I've always been fascinated by the audiophile qualities of cheese. :p

It was the old TV comedy, Allo Allo that first alerted me to the sonic properties of cheese, I always wondered why they put it in their ears when Rene's wife started singing. Apparently it works as some kind of auto-tuner when molded into the shape of an IEM because they never seemed to care when she started screeching. All in all it's pretty amazing stuff and when you've finished listening to your music you can put it on a cracker and eat it - can't do that with a pair of Sennheisers!

I just managed to fit my STX in the pcie x1 slot above the graphics card. I hope it doesn't droop because I'd be hard pushed to slide much more than a credit card between the emi shield of the STX and the back of my 7950. Why do they place the sockets so close? It's ridiculous.

Ridiculous it is, I got my Phoebus sandwiched between two gpu's with credit card clearance top and bottom, we all need larger cases to accommodate larger mobo's with more spacing, graphics cards now cover whatever slot is directly beneath it rendering it useless.
