.... and will they use more than 2 cores in the future

i ask this because i fancy an e8400 but wonder if a quad would be more future proof

i dont think fps games use more than one core at the moment, but what about crysis ?

i will be happy when they release games that are optimized for dual cores....quad core just seems so far away.

there may be a few......but its only a few

Was the source engine not updated a few months back to utilize multi-core environments? Aslong as the source game you play uses the latest version of the engine, TF2 / HL2 Ep2 then it should be utilizing more than one... although i'm not sure if CS: S / DOD: S got updated to the latest version of the engine, I know garrysmod did however so guess its hit or miss on that.

I don't think any game is yet to be built from the ground up with multicore in mind... atm I think they are just swapping off certain parts of the engine, like sound / physics, to a seperate CPU which whilst will give benefits I can't imagine is vastly optimized to show what multicore is really capable of in gaming.

yeh they did but it was only used for i think particles (am i right) css and the like havent got dual core or quad support. though do they really need it ?

I think SupCom was, about the only game that really taxes a quad core CPU.

my UT3 is 'forced' to use 1 core :D (see sig) runs pretty smooth 30 - 60 fps, drops to 15/20 at 'bad times' :(

im having same prob choosing between q6600 and 8400 :(

You get massively diminishing returns from having more cores for FPS games (due to one or two threads needing the vast majority of the power). I can't imagine quadcore offering more than a meagre improvement over dualcore for the next couple of years.
