I got home tonight about half an hour ago to a smell of gas, had a feeling that i must have left the hob on last night but before i went into the kitchen i opened a few windows, left it a bit then went into kitchen. One of the rings was on low but not lit, not sure if its blown out or auto switched off but it was cold. Its been on for about 23 hours. Do they auto switch off, or have i undone all my good work of not having the gas central heating on by leaving the hob on all that time?

it was on low but as soon as i walked in i could smell it, so i didnt turn any lights on but then i figured if it was gonna blow up, then it would have done so already cos the boiler is on the other side of the kitchen/dining room and it will switched itself on twice in that period plus the pilot light is on all the time. rather silly of me non the less.

Some hobs have a cut off after not being lit.. I've seen then once in a villa but not normally.

23 hours? I'm surprised you your house didn't go poof.

All new Gas hobs sold since May 2010 have FSD (Flame Safety Devices) fitted to automatically shut the gas off in the event of the flame going out. Basically a thermocouple linked to a solanoid valve which triggers if the temp drops (no flame).

Older Gas hobs may not have this.

You can check to see if your hob is fitted with a FSD. If you look at the ring you will see the igniter (a small ceramic cylinder with a metal tip usually) which sparks to light the hob. The FSD looks similar but is normally conical in shape and metalic instead of ceramic.

My Neff Hob has FSD fitted as well as electronic valves with child locks. It works very well and if the flame is out for more than 5 seconds then it turns the gas off to that ring.

You were lucky if you left the gas on for 23 hours and diddnt blow the place up!
