Do gas hobs auto switch off?

All new Gas hobs sold since May 2010 have FSD (Flame Safety Devices) fitted to automatically shut the gas off in the event of the flame going out. Basically a thermocouple linked to a solanoid valve which triggers if the temp drops (no flame).

Older Gas hobs may not have this.

You can check to see if your hob is fitted with a FSD. If you look at the ring you will see the igniter (a small ceramic cylinder with a metal tip usually) which sparks to light the hob. The FSD looks similar but is normally conical in shape and metalic instead of ceramic.

My Neff Hob has FSD fitted as well as electronic valves with child locks. It works very well and if the flame is out for more than 5 seconds then it turns the gas off to that ring.

You were lucky if you left the gas on for 23 hours and diddnt blow the place up!

Thanks for that, answers my question beautifully. I dont have the thingy and ive just tested it now and it didnt turn off on its own. Lesson learned (Hopefully)

I despair.

Bit harsh, no? ;) i know how i did it, had a few pans on the go and must have had the frying pan on low keeping something warm due to bad timing and while dishing up i must have thought it was off.

Worst I stayed out all night and so didn't know my hob was turned on but now you're questioning to yourself where I was ever thread.

Jus' saying.

lol, my days of going out on the lash when its a school night are well and truly over, kills me getting up at 5:45am as it is.

You are very lucky OP, I've just remembered one of my posts from 2006 when my cousin got blown up by a cooker - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17533905

Just found this from a Spanish newspaper

Alcudia blast: rubber tube on cooker had expired in 1994

ACCORDING to initial investigations into the butane gas explosion which injured three people and destroyed a chalet in the port of Alcudia on Monday, the blast was caused by a faulty gas cooker, the rubber tube of which had expired.. Carl Wall, 49, was flown to the special burns unit at the Vall d'Hebron hospital in Barcelona because of the serious nature of his injuries, which included burns to 66 per cent of his body. Yesterday, his condition was reported to be extremely serious but stable.
A hospital spokesman said that he was unconscious and on assisted breathing.
According to the Guardia Civil, Wall rented a room from Linda Feldman and John McGuire, who were released from Son Dureta hospital on Monday.
There was a gas cooker in his room so that he could prepare meals.
The report said that the cooker had not been officially serviced since 1994, and the rubber tube which connected the cooker to the butane gas bottle had expired. It also appears that some repairs had been made to the cooker. It is believed that Wall did not realise that there had been a leak and there was accumulated gas in the room and when he switched on the light, shortly before 9am, there was an explosion, which left him buried in the rubble and badly injured. Only a few walls of the chalet in Calle Perdiu were left standing.
The gas company recommends that installations should be checked every four years.

5 years on and he looks a lot better but with lots of wrinkled skin all over.
Up to that point in his life he had not put one penny into our Government because everything he did was backhanders, foreigners or benefits but our Government still gave him a house, car and £170 a week for life as long as he spends 2 months a year in this country even though he is a Spanish National.

As has been said, they don't auto switch off. My mrs left the hob on all night on the lowest setting a few months back, stayed lit the whole night too.

I only realised when I reached across it to switch the kettle on and thought 'hmmm my arm seems to be getting a bit warm here :o'

I did this for about 7 hours, unfortunately I couldn't actually smell the gas myself but somebody who came to my front door could.

I bought a gas sensor alarm off eBay the next day.

Always check with a candle or naked flame.

If you left the gas on, you'll see a small flash.

I have a leaky gas hob which is a bit annoying - even if it's turned off a small amount of gas will be leaking out (can smell it!) not so much of an issue as I usually turn the gas off at the regulator (bottled gas, not piped gas) but still annoying.

It does have auto shut off apparently , but I guess if it's a bigger leak that kicks in or if left on ..
