To answer the question. I remember reading somewhere that they do bite but their bite isn't strong enough to pierce the skin and the venom is too weak to do any harm anyway.

Disclaimer - I can't vouch for the truth of that claim so it's best to be safe than sorry and nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

It's not true. Most spiders can pierce human skin and a house spider certainly can. Even the small house spiders we get in the UK, let alone the giant house spiders we also get.

Neither the bite nor the venom is remotely dangerous to humans, though, not even babies. A wasp sting is much worse.

Having said that, there are a handful of native spider species that do have an unpleasant bite, one that will cause pain and swelling in an adult. They're all outdoor spiders, which is why you hardly ever hear of bites, but I suppose one could come indoors. I've no idea what kind of spider the OP found in his bath - doesn't look like the usual British house spider to me.

EDIT: Which shows how much I know about spiders. It looks just like a common British house spider. Although all the ones I've seen were black, not brown.

From the page Halfmad linked to:

House spiders were also taken internally to combat fevers. Richard Mead, writing in the 1700s, gave the prescription, ‘Take a spider alive, cover it with the new soft crummy bread without bruising it; let the patient swallow it fasting. This is an effectual cure, but many people are set against it. It has been frequently given to people who did not know the contents and has had the desired effect’ (Hillyard, 1988).

I'll have some aspirin instead, thanks.

I was told that house spiders do bite, but cant get through our skin so theres nothing to worry about.

Brown recluse bites are indeed very nasty, so it's a good job we don't get them in Britain.

Hay guyz, I found this in my room. What shall I do?

That's a baby house spider, it's Mother will probably be looking for revenge now :/

Check your baby's ears every half hour, that's where they lay all the eggs (it's warmer in there)
