Do I give Apple a try?

Phone contract is coming to an end and this time I'm thinking of trying Apple.

So had a look at a comparison site and I dont understand why the Apples 13 Pro Max is considered much much better than my Samsung S10 Lite.

Both have same size screen, mine has more RAM and the camera is great too. Performance is brilliant with no slow down or glitches.

What am I missing?

It's never worth comparing specs to guage performance.

Most higher end android handsets have always had better specs, the issue is the optimisation. Android is normally quite fragmented.

Apple stuff generally "just works". It's a bit cliche but the software is highly optimised.

Ive experienced this with an ipad. The OS is very fluid and animations are smooth. There's none of that stuttering and pauses you get on Android. Is that the main difference woukd you say?

Yes that's exactly it. Even on a high end Samsung tablet with incredible specs you still get that stutter in the os, swiping never quite feels as smooth.

The other thing that I noticed (been a few years since I was on android) is that certain applications are better optimised and even get updates sooner than android.

What appealed on Android was the flexibility, and being able to run certain apps like showbox etc at the time.

The closest you'll get to an Apple experience on android is with a google pixel phone.

Is that because Google made that phone and also Android? So it's Google own hardware running their own OS? I might go into town and have a play with one.

Yes that's exactly it. The OS tends to be optimised highly for the phone, you also get updates before any other handset, and there's no bloatware at all.

They also tend to be good value compared to other high end handsets.

Samsung for me used to always be my go to for Android, but I had a Pixel 4XL (last android phone I owned) and was really impressed.

You'll see for yourself if you get to play with one how much smoother everything feels compared to other Android handsets.

The only other thing worth mentioning with regards to apple is the eco system in general. It's nice having airpods, ipads, apple tv etc and it all just links up smoothly.

Android always felt slightly disjointed for me with other products (even from the same manufacturer)

Thank you for this, really appreciate it. I'll have a look at phone contracts for the Pixel Pro and compare them to the IPhone 13 Pro Max.... I need that large screen for watching videos

No problem. Please post your thoughts on here as I'm curious what you'll think once you've compared them.

Forget the videos it’s what you think of it that matters so just buy one and try it for a couple of weeks. There is a two week no quibble return policy.

It’s hassle.

I left Android after my buggy Pixel 2XL. Have been using iPhones since, and haven’t ever looked back :-)

I’ve since been provided various android devices as work phones (flagship Samsungs, OnePlus 8T, Pixel 5) and they’re just nowhere near in the same league when it comes to having a phone which just works.

Apple have had better hardware for several generations, as well as consistent software updates. You can easily keep the phone for several years without issue.

Some very cheap deals on the Pixel 6 Pro:

The iPhone will have better battery life, will be less buggy, feel fast for longer, and will be slicker/more integrated overall with the construction being price/more restrictive OS.

The 5GB Apple cloud is putting me off. I suppose I can connect my Google account to the iPhone to access Gmail and my Drive?
Google/Amazon/One Drive all work on iPhone no problem. In fact, while you do have to download the respective apps, you can actually integrate them into the existing Files system on the iOS which can be handy.

As for cost, once you go ‘paid’ it’s much of a muchness (depending on how much you need I guess). iCloud is 79p pm for 50gb whereas Google is £1.59 pm for 100gb so basically identical.

Personally, since I have Amazon Prime I use it as my long term photo back up instead of Apple Photos. I still use Apple photos but I only keep the photos I think I’ll want seemless access to in a pinch - generally I’ll purge the entire album at the end of each calendar year.

try a cheaper used apple phone first for a few months, why spend that much on an apple phone if you dont know if you like them.

they are all much the same, apple are all about keeping familiarity and consistancy between all their products.

I have used an iphone 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 8, xr, xs and they are all similar at heart , just polished and slowly fine tuned

The other option is to buy the model he wants and use it for a couple of weeks. If he doesn’t like it then there’s the Apple fourteen day return period where he can get a full refund.
