Need a new power supply as current ax860 is causing me all sorts of problems, been looking at seasonic prime 850w or the prime 1000w versions.

I have 980 sli oc edition strix cards,4790k cpu,vengance pro ram 2400MHz,

I do tend to upgrade, but will a 850w psu suffice for newer 1080s in sli and new cpus' such as 6700k and will be over clocking

A 850w psu will be plenty. A pair of 1080's and a 6700k/7700k will use even less power. Pascal gpu's are extremely power efficient. No need to pay silly amounts for one of Seasonics ovepriced psu's either, any of these will do the job just as well.

My basket at Overclockers UK:

The Bitfenix Whisper is a new model built by CWT and is a quad 12v rail design where each rail powers a specific group of components. 12v1 is motherboard and peripheral, 12v2 is CPU, 12v3 is GPU 1, 12v4 is GPU 2. The full 850w is available across the 12v rails and it has a 7 year warranty. Review here.

The XFX XTR 850w is a Seasonic built unit with a single 12v rail of 840w and has a 5 year warranty. Review here.

The Superflower Leadex II Gold 850w is another new unit. It is a tweaked version of the previous very good Leadex Gold platform and amongst other things now features a switch for the bright white leds so you can turn them off. It has a single 12v rail of the full 850w and comes with a 7 year warranty. No reviews yet but the EVGA G3 which is based on these have been getting excellent reviews.

The Superflower Leadex Platinum 850w is another single 12v rail unit with the full 850w available on it. It only has a 5 year warranty which I feel should be higher at this level. No reviews.

The Corsair RM850X is a CWT built unit with a single 12v rail of the full 850w. It has a 10 year warranty. Review here.

Thanks for all the info , appreciated ;) I am leaning towards the xfx xtr as its geared towards gaming, not sure about superflower as I seen that post about the guy having issues getting a rma.

I see where your coming from,so many brands offering this and that on a power supply, but how does it put you off?

It would put me off too. Most gaming products are either tarted up junk or overpriced IMO. Marketing and adding flashy tat I don't want or need costs money. Somewhere along the line, I'm paying for that, whether in a poorer product or increased price.

Generalizing, but making it look like a transformer and adding LEDs does not making it a better product for gaming!

I would take the Bitfenix Whisper over the XFX XTR as it's cheaper with a longer warranty and it's a more up to date platform. Don't get me wrong, the XFX XTR is a good psu, I wouldn't have suggested it else, it's just that it's been around for a while now and the Seasonic KM3 platform that it is based on has been around for several years. If you were interested in the Superflowers but are put off by that warranty thread there is always the EVGA versions with the longer warranties. The EVGA G2/G3/P2/T2 psu's are based on the respective Superflower units with a different fan and some other tweaks. The EVGA 550w and 650w G2/G3 have 7 year warranties but all the others have a 10 year warranty which gets processed at their UK service centre.

Superflower Leadex Gold = EVGA Supernova G2
Superflower Leadex Gold II = EVGA Supernova G3
Superflower Leadex Platinum = EVGA Supernova P2
Superflower Leadex Titanium = EVGA Supernova T2

I personally think that these are amongst the very best psu's that you can buy at the moment and the new G3 units have improved even further on the already extremely good G2 units. The downside is that they cost more than the Superflower equivalents.

Just out of curiosity, what sort of problems are you getting with your ax860 ?

I have the same PSU, and have had some strange things going on with my pc over the last couple of months, and I think its something to do with the PSU.

I have the same PSU, and have had some strange things going on with my pc over the last couple of months, and I think its something to do with the PSU.
Hybrid fan mode stopped working,pc stutting down ,reseting, real bad coil whine, been troubleshooting every part in pc and it all points to psu.

I have also had mine in hybrid mode for the last 3 years.

I have switched it over to manual mode, to see if if makes any difference ?

Same sort of problems though, PC just loses power and restarts, trouble with USB ports, hight DPC latency spikes, LED lighting on keyboard flickering...

If I do get another PSU, it will probably be the "EVGA SuperNova G3 850W"

Caveat here - Seasonic might be more expensive but they usually use higher rated components as well for instance if you compare the XFX and Seasonic units based on the same core design the Seasonic usually has a highly regarded Sanyo Denki fan versus a more generic ADDA fan on the XFX - the ADDA ones aren't actually that bad but have about 1/3rd the rated lifespan and likewise with capacitor selection, etc. often the Seasonic uses caps rated around 3x more hours and 105C versus 85C compared to the variants used by XFX and Corsair, etc. (EDIT: Just generalising here to put over the idea as for instance some Corsair PSUs have all 105C caps, etc.).
