Do i need 4GB?

2Gb -> 4Gb actually slows down processor intensive applications in Vista 64, the proper improvement is from 2Gb -> 8Gb or more.

Hehe :D

I wonder how much of that is from memory leaks and bloat code in libraries?

Leopard has the same issues. With 10.5.3 (next update) there's several memory leaks fixed.. I was hitting 3.2GB during Xcode compiles yesterday with a general average around 2GB used...

Also the more memory channels available (slots used) to the memory controller the bigger the bandwidth for quad core chips.

I tried that before with my Vista key from the bottom of my laptop but it didn't accept the key.

Were you trying to install the same version of Vista (ie key from Vista Ultimate 32 bit used with Ulltimate 64 bit)?

Yes, Ultimate is the only retail package that includes both 32 bit and 64 bit... if you have a different version then you must order a 64 bit DVD and key from here

The key not working from the bottom of the laptop would indicate to me that the installed version of Vista is OEM.

An OEM key is good for jack **** apart from re-installing THAT particular OEM copy.

You can't even order the 64bit DVD from MS with an OEM.

but if u have a friend with vista64 oem u could borrow the disk and use your 32bit license/key..

btw u need to star out your swearing

Just to add to the above, I was running Vista 64bit with 4GB and it was pretty nice. Since all my Ballistix died I've gone 8GB and I'm shocked by the difference, it fairly whizzes along now! Quite impressed.

I'm likely to get one of the new Asus P45 boards (E or Deluxe) and want some fairly high spec memory, however, the heat spreaders on the PC2-8500 modules appear to prevent you from loading all 4 slots... which ones will allow all 4 sots to be used?

I have used 4GB from the off on my current system so can't comment on the difference between 2GB & 4GB, but it runs so smooth it's a joy just minimising and maximising windows:p:D

And at current prices its criminal not to get 4GB. I paid £160 for my 4GB about 10 months ago.

I paid £399 for 4mb 10 years ago!

I can beat that. I remember paying £480 for a 4Mb upgrade to take my pc from 4Mb to 8Mb plus paying £200 for an ISA hard drive cache card and paying another £240 for the 2Mb of ram to go into it plus £399 for a 3x NEC Cd player.

I had more disposable income in those days :(

£70 or thereabouts home premium OEM.

I just question the point of buying RAM you can't ever possibly use no matter how hard you try, baffles me the amount of people with 4GB and 32bit.

Why not? You still get 3.25Gb which is fine for me. 3.25Gb is better than 2Gb plus it's there if I go 64 bit in the future and I have two slots spare to put another 4Gb in if I do.

it may well be fine for you but the point is you've paid for something you can't use, thats the point I'm making.

Its just a matter of opinion ;)

Anyway, you can find vista 64 for a LOT less than £80 if you try hard enough :D

Yeah you probably can but £80 isn't silly money which was my point really.

And yeah, i'm not using 0.75Gb of my memory but it was a new build so I didn't want 2 x 1Gb chips since I will have to sell them later to move to 8Gb and 64bit and 2 x 2Gb was only £70 so I have spent £13.12 on something I am not using for the moment. I can live with that ;)
