My system
5450 passive sapphire
asus p5e-vm hdmi with a E8200 cpu
9 hdds
400 watt antec or corsair psu(not sure atm)

This is a HTPC and only for video and music

Just upgraded my TV to a Panasonic 3D 1080P from a LG 720P
Before the films and movie clips played fine but now when I play the 1080P clips and especially the 3D stuff I get quite a bit of juddering and dropped frames
Tried different software players and reinstalling codecs but has not made any difference so I am thinking the gpu is not up to the task
Any one agree on this?
What gpu would you suggest I upgrade to?
cheers:)

7850 would suit this perfect.

I would say top end of budget the 7750 is a good shout for a card with a small footprint. Would allow you to do some light 'armchair gaming' too.

Purely htpc? hmm, not my area. Lol. There's a passive 6670 on ocuk but it's £60..

Yeah this system is purely for movies and music
Main rig has a 4870 ,not much of a gamer these days, too old and slow to frag lol
I could put the 4870 into the htpc but it is not 3D capable I don`t think plus I would be concerned about power issues with 9 hdds and only a 400 watt psu

Generally full sbs files also got a bluray drive in it so will be playing some BD discs
That 6670 looks more attractive price wise :D
How power hungry is it though?
I originally chose the 5450 a while ago because it was low powered

Before you go and buy a new card I'd check the TV settings first.

There's usually a "Direct" mode so that the TV displays what's being sent to it, no clashes with refresh rates, image processing etc. It may be called something else on your panel, but most TVs have something similar now. If not try and turn off all the processing features in the TV settings and make sure the refresh rate on the card & TV are in sync.

Not really up on AMD HTPC cards, but IIRC the 5450 should be fine for 1080p content.

Sure it will be fine but maybe optimalnrg could advise on that one better, are all your hdds internal?
Yup got a huge case to house them all at the beginning of the summer. room for up to 14 he he he :p
Edit:Some... 1080P plays OK... but not all, main issue is the 3D.Have tried all things setting wise that I could find with no appreciable benefit

Even a 6450 might do the job as it is 2x more powerful than the 5450, but don't quote me on that.

Sure it will but a bit more grunt dosn't. Hurt, its one reason why i asked about file type, full sbs no probs at all 3d iso's, there the pain but i think its more software related.

Just had a quick read hdd's use 7-10w each

And a system with a i7 920, maximus extreme, 3 sticks ram and a 6670 pulls 195w at load from ive read. So yours if you were too use a 6670 would be a bit less.

Think you may have missed this...don't think you need a new card at all.

Either TV settings or refresh rate settings on the PC will probably fix it.

Have tried a few settings
60HZ judder and dropped frames
24HZ same
50HZ same
hdmi lead has `high speed` printed on it so I ruled that out as it is up to the job (but just for good measure i swapped the stand alone blu ray player lead)

Ordinary bluray discs via this player play nice and smooth

I must admit reading various threads on movie playback via pc makes me even more pleased that i bought my popcorn hour (2years ago), plays 99.9% of movie/music files, has a pretty good front end, family friendly and the picture quality is great, have it on my network, so can transfer files, stream e.t.c, kids can connect to it with there laptops. One of my best purchases and it beats scouring the net for codecs/drivers. Awesome

There's a passive 6770 in the clearance section for the same price as that 6670. Maybe a bit overkill but a bargain nonetheless - link.

Not sure what set you have, on current Panasonics there's a "Game" mode, this turns off a lot of the TV image processing. Have you tried that? Basically you want to be able to pass through the HTPC image directly to the TV without the TV doing anything to it on top.

Shame I don't know your card or TV, but wouldn't want you to go spending a load of money only to see the same results with a new card when it's the TV itself ;)
