Hi,,

Just got a PS3 and am trying to connect to my PC. The PC is connected via CAT5 to a router in the other side of my house. I have plugged the PS3 cable into the spare LAN port of my PC but it isn't detecting the PC.

I am unable to connect the PS3 directly to the router as its in the other part of my house.

I guess I'm basically asking what am I doing wrong ?

Thanks

i take it your router is not wireless then which means you need to get a new wireless router so you can connect both your PC and PlayStation, or if your current router has some spare ports you will need to get a cat5 cable from the PS3 to the router.

you may be able to use the LAN on the PC but i am not to sure on that as you haven't given us much to go on, it would be a bit more helpful if you can post some info on the make/model of the LAN on your PC.

can you not get the router into the same room as the PS3 and PC ?

OK my motherboard is Asus P5W DH Deluxe. The LAN port(s) are Marvell Yukon Gigabit if that helps ?

And no I can't get the router into the same room as the PS3

Cross-over cable would negate the need for the router/switch, but only used for temporary setups between 2 devices (PC to PC transfer)...

Assume it would work fine (technically it should) but I dno if the PS3 would support such simple networking...

EDIT: Just googled PS3 crossover and it doesnt seem possible at a glance...

it looks like a wireless router is going to be your best bet

how far is your router from the PS3 and do you have many walls in between ?

I actually have another Netgear ADSL Modem / Router thats not in use, Can I plug that into the spare LAN port on my PC then connect the PS3 to the router ?

you may be able to us it as a switch or you could get a netgear switch as they are cheap then all you would do is this cable from router into switch then PS3 and PC into the switch.

google netgear FS605

you will need to see if you can set the 834g to just be a switch its been a while since i use that router myself but if you can't then get the FS605 as its just like using a mains extension lead only with cat5

Never used Netgear but assume that resetting the firmware to default, switching off DHCP and ensuring there are no details in the Internet sections (tbh no details of your connection anywhere) and it should just function like a switch...

My motherboard has bulit in WiFi so I've just connect the antenna and installed the drivers. Not working at present to have some more settings to adjust I suppose

i don't see how this will help you, all you are doing is setting up your pc for wireless use.

Ok, so you have a cat5 cable running from your router to your PC - can't you just add a second cable going directly from the router to the PS3, following the same route as the first?

Draw a picture or something. It all sounds a bit confusing to me.

Sounds like you want to share your internet connection on your PC with your PS3. What I cannot understand is if the PC has a cat-5 cable that will reach the router, why can't a similar cable go into the router from the PS3, rather than to the PC?

Also you would need a crossover cable, unless the PS3 has an auto switching NIC (which I don't think it has).

Yeah I read that, and it makes no sense. You don't need anything fancy in a device to support a crossover cable. Most network cards are auto sensing anyway so even a straight cable would work (although if the PS3 one isn't he would need a crossover cable).

All very confusing until OP replies (he is in Australia so may do at weird times :) ).

Crossover technically should work, but glancing over the first page of google hits just showed that people were having problems - luckily hes got another router-cum-switch to use...
