Do I need a router to connect PS3 to PC ?

so I just ended up buying a switch today.... should be here wednesday, problem solved

thanks for all the replies from everyone...

Ok well not all fixed with the switch.

I have the router into Port 1, then my PC and PS3 into ports 2 & 3. The PC has access to the internet fine but the PS3 won't autodetect the network.

I assume I therefore have to enter all this info manually :

IP Address
Subnet Mask
Default Router
Primary DNS
Secondary DNS

I know my IP address and the Subnet Mask is already populated.

Can somebody please tell me where I get the others ? :confused:

Thanks

Log onto your router - should be some kind of info page and replicate that. Or go into Network Connections on your PC and double click your active LAN network connection then support tab in the popup window and then details button (this is for XP)

Afraid we cant give you that much help as we dont know if your router is acting as your DHCP (assigning your local network an IP address automatically - will start 192.168.x.x) this isnt your Internet IP address thats given to you by your ISP.
Subnet Mask should be 255.255.255.0
Default Router (I assume you mean Default Gateway) should be your Routers IP address (differs by make but should start 192.168.x.x)
Primary/Secondary DNS is generally provided by your ISP.

Anyway if you replicate everything that your PC is set to (other than IP address as I guess your is automatically assigned) it should work...

ok I put them all in

it starts testing

OBTAIN IP ADDRESS - SUCCESS
INTERNET CONNECT - FAILED

DNS error (80710102)

I'm googling now for it

Who is your ISP?

On face value it sounds like youve got the DNS servers wrong...

Try OpenDNS for DNS servers if the ones on your PC arent working (dno why they wouldnt otherwise you couldnt resolve domain names on your PC browser either)

ISP is Bigpond (Telstra)

I am getting the DNS PRimary and Secondary from the setings web page for the router and have input them correctly.......

For the sake of it try the OpenDNS DNS servers on your PS3 and see if you have any luck.

When I had a quick google for that error it did seem the PS3 was just unhappy with the DNS servers...

Forgot you were in OZ - do any of these DNS addresses on the first table look familiar?

I tried the OpenDNS ones :

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

They didn't work.

And the ones on that website for Bigpond :

61.9.194.49
61.9.195.193

Are the ones I have been using........:confused:

Hmm kinda out of suggestions really - IP connect sounds like it getting to your router (i.e. LAN) but not getting any further than that (WAN).

Try rebooting your router in case it hasnt picked up the PS3 for some reason - leave it off for a min though...

I take it you've forwarded the relevant ports to the ps3?

If you havent' forward these lot to the IP address you designated for the PS3:

TCP:

* 5223

UDP:

* 3478
* 3479
* 3658 should also be opened for voice chat.

NO

The PS3 DOES NOT need 80 or 443 forwarded to it (WWW & SSH, I think). Ignore any websites that tell you this. I think you have confused outgoing open ports, with incoming open ports.

What is the harm in forwarding those ports out of curiosity? I've had em like that for the best part of a year and both my PC and PS3 off the same router are flawless. Before i forwarded that entire list my PS3 had major issues getting online, i can see why the two you listed should probably not be forwarded but at least one of the ones in my list must help as it fixed my problem.
