I recently bought some Aego M speakers, and i am using onboard sound (ASUS P5B). Since they are 2.1 speakers do i really need a soundcard? thanks :)

Hey welcome to the forums!

I beleive that motherboard has onboard sound for up to 8.1. Your speakers will work just fine using the onboard.

Soundcards have higher sound quality and take load off a motherboard but they aren't required.

Everyone needs a soundcard, it just takes them a while to part with £60 to do so! ;)

I recently switched, im just glad i did, but if you haven't got the money or could do with spending it elsewhere then it do so, its a luxury, but you might feel the difference isn't acceptable for the price you are paying.

But if you are into your audio then it might be worth considering, i've got mine running through a decent pair of head phones and also an amp with some decent floorstanders, under both i can notice the difference its an immense difference for me, but it might not be for some.

Also, welcome to the forums, dont be offended if you dont get many replies in here, the sound part of OCUK does tend to struggle for posters.

Thanks for the help, and Jaffa_cake, i knew that i did not have to have a soundcard, i am not that much of a noob heh :D

The reason i am thinking of getting a soundcard is that i have recently built a new PC and it is decent (i think) so i thought i would buy a soundcard. however i may just buy a new keyboard and mouse, because i am still using my the ones from my previous PC.

Oh and thanks for the welcome guys cheers ;)

i have the same speakers i used the onboard sound for around 7 weeks or so and they were fine, but the other day i bought a xfi extreme audio and can defo tell the difference :D

I had the same problem. Needed a new keyboard, new mouse and would have liked new sound.

I has some sound, but my old mouse was doing strange things so that had to be replaced. Then it was a toss up between the xfi & keyboard, the xfi won simply as i could walk into a shop and pick it up for £55. The keyboard i could get for £40 at the same place, but could get it for way less than £30 online, so that was my reason on picking sound.

Sounds like you are in a similar boat. You'll appreciate it if you go with an XFI, or a nice new wireless K&M combo is probably going to have the same effect.
