do i need a tv license in this scenario?

How can it be worth buying a license when it is completely unenforcable? Its like sticking religiously to 30 in an empty wide back road with no cameras, just sticking with the law for the sake of it, but completely pointlessly.

This argument comes up every time, its really not worth discussing.

Can open... Worms, everywhere!

How about observing the speed limit in case someone walks into the road, not because of the fear of a fine. [/ot]

Then its not your problem.
They stupid enough to walk out in front of a moving car = oxygen thief.

In scenario provided by jez of course.

Dont be stupid :) You know very well that wasnt the point being made. Pointless unenforcable law which doesnt hurt anyone. No possinble harm to either yourself or others. Only reason to stick to it is to feel as though you havent been naughty.

rules are there to be broken. there are things in this life paying for and others that are not worth paying the tv license is one of those.

4)shops inform the tv people about the purchase of a tv, hence they ask you for you address,

They don't inform anyone. They have never asked for my address when buying a tv ever and I payed by cash. The tv licensing company send people round to your house only because they know you don't have a license, not because they know you have a tv, hence people getting visited by the inspectors when they don't even have a tv!

yup i have always been sceptical about retailers providing tv licensing with names and addresses of new tv owners.....another urban myth potentially spread by tv licensing.

not true im affraid. as a retailer its an offence not to supply names and addresses from equipement sold thats eligable for the tv licence. There are fines involved if you dont keep up to date as the retailer.

They knew when I brought my TV and wouldn't leave me alone until I told them about three times we already have a licence.

The tv license ppl wouldnt leave us alone when we didnt own a tv and hence had no license. The threatening letters were out of order in my opinion.

We are getting rid of tv soon and looking forward to not opening any letters from tv licensing.

If I were you I'd start shopping at a better place. ;)

Is my address passed to TV licensing when I buy TV equipment?

Yes - retailers are obliged by law to do so. This includes TV enabled PCs and TV cards. The same applies if you rent. However, not all vendors do, in spite of risking a fine. There have been a number of high profile fines for stores which have not passed over such information, including Asda and Woolworth.

"they dont pass on anything" is not true, if they are doing their jobs that is.

Well the places I went to didn't because they didn't get my name and address. So more than just Asda and Woolworths don't care and rightly so it's just an invasion of privacy.

rights, wrongs and opinions aren't in question energizer. Your statement is incorrect. If they are doing their jobs correctly then yes, they WILL pass on your details.

Why would I shop somewhere else so people can come round and hassle me? Even in your post it says some shops dont, wether they are supposed to or not, so its not totally incorrect.

oopps.......i stand corrected

you mean such as the 'well known' retailer who recently went bust and changed their company name so nobody can claim on warrenty?

LOL, im not here to discuss who you buy your tv's from. I'm just saying yor statement is incorrect, that's all.

I dont know if its changed but a year ago

I bought a cheap DVD player from a big high street retailer they wanted my address i said wtf, no way i want to buy a dvd player. They said they have to provide it to TV licensing by law, and refused to sell me it without my name and address.

Yes you read it right a DVD player not a TV, madness, they are total bullies at times those tv licensing lot.
