I have a passport from a european country, which is not in the EU. I also have an 'indefinite leave to remain' thing in my passport. Been living here for about 16 years. I have a national insurance number.

Anyway do i need anything, ie. work permit to get a job? Cant seem to find anythin on the home office website...

Before anyone asks, no i have no applied for British passport cos i dont want one. :)

Therefore if you are not normally resident in the UK, you will need to bring your passport, birth certificate or other appropriate immigration documents if you are invited to an interview.

So no :P, just enough ID/Immig Docs.

Firstly, you could apply for a UK passport, but you may be surprised to learn you may not get one ;)

Secondly, as you have a right to permently be a resident in the UK you don't need a work permit.

Wth? You been here for 16 years, got indefinite leave to remain and you ask whether u can work?Am I missing something here?

if you have ILR you don't need a work permit, those are only for people who are in the UK on the basis of a specific job. Any employer gives you any hassle, there's a number called the emplyer's helpline, that should set them straight. They're on 08450106677 iirc, might be worth checking that though!

that's only for EU nationals, slightly different, he already has indefinate leave to remain, which basically IS permanent residence status, not just a right to it (even better!)

Yeah what's wrong with our country!

:D seriously though, it's hassle applying for nationality, taking the test thing they have to do do, blah blah blah. Think some countries don't like ppl having dual nationality either, so might lose original nationality.

yup, that's right. Permanent Residence is usually used to describe applications under EU law (EU nationals and any foreign family members) applications under british immigration laws are usually referred to as ILR.

you just need to take your passport when you join. ( I didnt mean "applying" as in going for an interview , hence why i said the below bit about the employer - they wouldnt be an employer if its just an interview!!!)

If you have indefinite leave to remain you don't need anything else UNLESS your passport has expired, then they would need to see the renewal page.

If the employer does still think they need to call the Home Office then I suggest they call before 3pm as they have never answered when I have called around that time.

Tell me about it...lots of bureaucratic stuff and all in all up to about 300 quid(268 for application+34 taking the test). The government certainly couldnt complain there.

This is BS, you don't need any of this when applying for a job, infact you don't need to do anything different from a british applicant.

yup, the fact that the passport has expired doesn't matter, that just means you can't travel on it. The ILR is still valid, and doesn't even NEED to be transferred to a newer passport, it's acceptable to carry both when needed.

Considering he's currently at uni, it's not that surprising.
He's been at Uni for 16 years and has never needed even a part time job? that is some hardcore blagage, respect to the king of all student spongers!

when you start a job you have to provide a passport or birth certificate or other to prove you can work in the UK. my friend had to when we employed him and as for the passport expiry not making a difference this is what i was told by everyone i spoke to at the Home Office

so rather than being rude towards me saying its BS why don't you go tell them.

Or maybe he's been at uni for 4 years and lived here for 12 years previously as a child?

I didn't, all they needed was a national insurance number, and that was working for the local council.
