Do I need an SSD...

just connect the drive you want to clone and the drive you want to clone to

then use samsungs own data migration tool, once done unplug your old drive or just set the new ssd as first boot device in the bios

use macrium reflect to clone with if your not using a Samsung ssd

Even a new mechanical drive for the OP would be much quicker - they are quite speedy now but of course SSD is better still.

Just bought an SSD last night after reading this thread. :p

What would you consider you get the most benefit from putting on it? I'm thinking: Windows, AVG, Browser, Games, Adobe suite.. that's it really. Anything else you think I should put on it?

AVG will hog too much space over time. I switched to MSE a few months ago after some advice on here. All is well.

Sweet, cheers. Planning on a fresh install when it gets here.

Plug in SSD and change the BIOS settings to AHCI.
Install windows and other essentials onto it.
Plug other drive back in, format it and re-install all my other stuff.

That right?

Just the SSD.

Control panel - System and security - Admin tools - Defrag hard drive - Turn off.

Modern HDD's dont need as much defragging as they used to. I tend to forget about it these days.

Installing my SSD tomorrow, after a bit of light reading, this is my plan of attack - missing anything?

> Unplug old HDD and plug in new SSD

> Boot into BIOS and enable AHCI mode SATA controller

> Restart, install windows and all other essentials

> Do these tweaks!

> Shutdown and plug old HDD in, then format this.

> Install other crap.

Also plan to tidy my cables up a bit while I'm in there, why the hell not!
