Do i need new RAM?

Hi, Ive decided that I'm going to try and OC my E8400 to 4.0Ghz. I have it at a stable 3.6Ghz but i want to push it a little further, i have a Arctic Freezer 7 Pro so im fine in that department, i think my ram is letting me down though. I have tried clocking to 4Ghz but every time i run orthos blend test my computer restarts. I can run a CPU stress test for hours with no issues but as soon as i run a blend test it crashes almost immediately.

System is:

Asus p5q pro
E8400
Kingston PC2 6400 800mhz

I have tried raising the ram volts to no success, it was cheap so i'm probably in need of some more. So should i be able to reach 4Ghz with my ram or do i need new stuff? Recommendations?

Should run fine. I ran my cheapo £25 800mhz memory @ 900mhz+ for over a year before selling it.

Run your memory on a divider so it stays at 800mhz if it really won't go over the stock settings.
Also, if you've increased the volts, what to?? What timings are you using??

The volts are at 2.10 for the ram and i haven't touched the timing's as last time it stopped the computer from booting. Should i change Nb or Sb voltage at all or not?

ive been trying for a while today, and still ive had no luck. I can boot ok but after a few minutes the computer freezes. Is this a sign of low volts or ram letting me down? I have clock at 445mhz and 1:1 divider. Help :)

Will probably need a bit more NB voltage if you're hitting that kind of FSB. Try 1.35-1.4. SB voltage can be left alone.

Should be fine. Up the NB voltage a bit, that's how i done it.

E8200 @ 3.8ghz, 4x1gb OCZ platinum ram running at 950mhz 5-5-5-15. And i have a cheaper mobo than you.

Cpu stress test ran for an hour with no problems, but after a minute of blend test the computer froze up. I have my timings at 5-5-5-18, and their voltage at 2.1. The NB is 1.36, what should i do ?

2 x 2gb, termination voltage? Seeing that the tests run fine when its cpu intensive and they fail immediately when its blend test do you think this shows that the memory is the weak link?

It's either the memory itself or the mobo, yeah - definitely not the CPU.

I have that board and it clocks my Q6600 to 430FSB fairly easily, so it should go quite a bit higher with a 45nm dual - it's a good board. I don't know much about that RAM but it could be that you're just reaching its limit. You could always try really loose timings (6-6-6 or even 7-7-7) as that may help the RAM to go a bit further, or might help you rule it out as the problem.

Ok, do you think raising the volts a bit more to say 2.16 or around there would be worth a shot or too risky? Can the timings be slackened anymore as they are default right now.

Upping the volts a bit is worth a go - shouldn't do any harm in the short term as long as it doesn't get too hot.

Just edited my post above about the timings :)

Well i tried changing the timings to 6-6-6-18 but i couldnt get past the asus screen so i had to reset cmos, should changing the timings do that or am i doing it wrong?

Oh crap! i changed the timings again and after i reset the cmos battery and booted everything seems to have stopped working. The first time i boot up it said something about not finding the users system so i was on a blank user. Then Kaspersky stopped working and exited and now i have some error saying: Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode driver framework host process has stopped working. What have i done

Just checked nothing else works e.g google earth, itunes, photoshop. They say required files are missing?

Ive formatted my hdd and now im trying to reinstall vista, i get to expanding the vista files and then i get an error message:

E:/Sources\install.wim 0x800701e7

I press ok and then i get:

Rollback.exe
Instruction at 0x75d940ed referenced memory at 0x00000001. The memory could not be read.

Please can someone help, i really don't have a clue whats the issue anymore.

First off, try to keep cool. Not easy given the circumstances I know.

Set everything to stock CPU, RAM, NB everything. Then try to re-install OS. Did you try a restore point prior or roll back before re-installing , this is a fairly extreme solution...
