As the topic title suggests?

I now have a new pc that can handle games well so want to play HL2.

I have HL1 but never completed it, i think i got to the surface, where your in a lift and there's a helicopter outside shooting at you, how far into the game is that?

Thanks. :D

Adam

No you dont. HL2 is it's own story.

BUT

The characters are the same. You should finish HL to understand the characters relationships. Also, its easy, and doesnt take long :)

I never completed HL1 before playing HL2. I think I got right near to the end almost (just after Xen). And then I got stuck at a bit which I couldn't get passed. I was sure it was a 'glitch'.

Anyway I just did a google and came across the exact problem:

I am on the gonarch's lair part of the game. He ran away from me twice and
is down in a cave thing. when i go down i fight him but then slide backwards
and down into some pit thing. He never follows me. according to
walkthroughs he is supposed to fall down and create a hole in the ground.
After attempting many times and dieing or getting stuck down below with
nothing to kill me, i turned on godmode, noclip and all weapons and proceeded
to unload everyhting on the spiders sack. No kill, no hole, he just stands
there and leaks out green goop everytime i shoot his thing. I have no idea
why he wont fall and make the hole.

It is on the level after Xen (4.15 Gonarch's Lair) and is about 3 levels from the end. It didn't matter how many times I re-loaded the last save and how many times I did that section, I always encountered the above problem.

Xen also really put me off, which is probably why I never bothered to go and finish it. But maybe I should.

I've completed HL2, and you definately don't need to have completed HL1, but obviously the stories are linked a bit.

Aye you wont finish HL1.
you will get to zen and turn it off.

Just the same as you will play HL2 and think "eh? whats all the fuss been about"
Favorite review quote for HL2 "they say 'we dont go to Ravenholm' ill tell you why they dont go to Ravenholm its bloody boring"

So is HL2 worth buying?

Is it better to just get it from a games shop in town or d/l it via steam?

Im not on a very fast connection thats all. :(

I guess some people's fuss just isnt the same as other's. opinion is a marvellous thing :P

To the OP: i suggest you play both and make up your own mind :/

Just buy it from shop if you're not hot on your conn.

You have to make sure he goes down the hole before you do? Been a long time.

No he does - but he never falls into the netting and creates the final hole in the ground where you're meant to enter the portal (according to the walkthroughs). It's been a LONG time since I played it, but I can remember thinking 'this can't be right' and I'm sure I showed it to a friend who had already completed it and they said that something wasn't right. Didn't matter how many times I did it, we couldn't get it to play through the sequence of events that were meant to happen.

Play HL1 - not because you need to for HL2 to make any sense, but because it's such a classic game. It's the gaming equivalent of listening to the Beatles back catalogue before you listen to an Oasis album.

Yep, it's worth buying. It's not the best game in the world ever, but it's still a very good game. I much prefer HL2 over Doom 3, which was released at the same time-ish.

How slow a connection are we talking about? It's a fairly large download, from what I remember... although I actually have the retail box which I normally use, I just download it when I'm at the in-laws and want something to play.

It's pretty cheap in most shops these days, so you might actually save money by buying the box version and you'll have a nice case to look at.

I have the exact same issue. I have reloaded it countless times. The annoying thing is, I had to figure out how to solve about 3 other serious glitches earlier in the game to get to that point and find a terminal glitch.

I was so angry. Guess il wait for Black Mesa.

Hl2 single player is a straight line on rails bore fest get it for the mods. It's only £11 on steam, get the orange box which includes TF2.
