Do i need to complete HL1 to understand HL2?

HL is easily the best fps ever created. Ive played through hl1, opposing force, blueshift, hl2 and ep1, loved every single one. I cant wait for ep2 w00t!!!

Anyone who hasnt played the first, owe it to themselves to play through it, a true classic.

my main steam annoyance is happening right now. i'm downloading hl1 and am getting 50-100kb/s on an 8mb line. pretty crap considering it's a paid for game. yet when i download free demos, it quite often maxes out my connection. :p

Hmmm, you guys have got me thinking about playing Half Life 1 again now.
I'm sure I have the original in a box, in storage, around here somewhere.

Just wondering how much of an improvement the "source" version is on Steam?

I often see it there, preloaded (Guess it came down with HL2 or EP1) for $9.95.

Anybody played the original, and the source version to compare?
I'm guessing it's just the original game, rendered on the Source engine, so it looks a bit nicer?

V1N.

I prefer the responsive feel of the old 1 over the source one.
Still cant be bothered with either though

Yeah i never finished HL1 either, Zen bit put me off, soon as i got to there i stopped playing, really spoilt the game that crap bit, HL2 is great though, and i sussed the story from there. :)

you can register your original key with steam and it'll unlock it (and a load of other old valve games :) )

That never even occured to me.
I was looking at it like a totally new game.

Now I have to decide whether it's worth going through the hassle of trying to find my old CD box, or just pay the £5.

What other goodies would I get for using my orig CD key?

If you register an old Half-Life CD key, you'l get the following on your Steam account:
Half-Life
Opposing Force
Blue Shift
Counter-Strike 1.6
Team Fortress Classic
Deathmatch Classic
Ricochet

You wont get Half-Life: Source, as it's a separate game you have to pay for.

Half-Life: Source isn't a bad game, it is simply Half-Life converted to the Source engine with a few tiny additions such as basic ragdoll bodies and a few nice Directx9 effects and explosions. Plus it gives you the full chapter choices at the start so you can skip half of the game if you want to easily without cheating.
