Do I need to declare an air filter?

Ring and ask. I had one insurer not care if it was an OEM fit in the standard air box, another wanted me to declare it.

But as many say above unless you have done other mods and mapped it, the filter will make no difference apart from make a little more noise and you may lose power... TyreRviews.co.uk did a good video on it:

Stop with this fake news.

We have know for generations that a K&N makes 10bhp AT LEAST on a Mini 1000, so on something proper must be, what, 150bhp?

Proves performance, the k&n on the bmw yielded an extra 10nm torque.

Also had the dyno plots been side by side its likely the k&n made more across the mid rev range.

Making more top end isn't the overall gain as you are at 8000rpm for only a second every so often. If you make an extra 5-10bhp from 3000rpm upwards and an extra 10nm then that's a win right? Even if the gain tails off when you change gear...

I want my money back then and my pair of K&N filters only gave me 1-2bhp on my mg midget :(

Although Mr Vizard in his bible on the A series mini engine did comprehensive tests on everything and K&N filters do make a performance difference. Thing is when you are only starting with 67 bhp, 2 bhp is almost 3% gain!

True, but ignorance isn't a defence which will hold.
It is actually. It's even written in the terms and conditions.
I had a few mods on a previous car I was unaware of until I needed to claim and they pulled them up. Told them I didn't have a clue about them and that was that.

You have to be careful fitting 2, if you get them out of phase they cancel each other out.

It was theft. Their argument was that it made the car more appealing. Was a lot of years ago, they may be better nowadays.

Blimey.

I would be surprised if that stood up in court these days if you pursued it.

How would a thief even be able to recognise a slightly different sunroof, and would that credibly be the reason the car was stolen?

the car, an escort in this case, was more desirable as with the sunroof made it appear it was a higher specced model. Sort of made sense back when sunroofs weren't common.

People racing always take their filters out. Nothing beats no filters for max air flow and max power ;)

People have actually tested that on a dyno and still didn't really gain anything :D

If no filter doesn't improve things, how can another filter :/

If you shove a sock in your intake would you not expect your performance to drop?

Its more a case of every car has a baseline with no filter and every thing you then fit filter wise, reduces that airflow intake, some filters worse than others. A K&N filter will always be worse than no filter. Its just drops less bhp than other filters.

And lots of tests on dynos with different filters show that is the case, or certainly on carburettor engines which is what I am referring too. Perhaps with modern fuel injection engines it makes little difference anymore.

4 minutes in for air filters.

Cheeky! No idea what you checked there. Racing midgets are normally pulling 150bhp.

Even mine pulls 130 which since it only weights 700kgs, gives it 185bhp per tonne. Not bad.
Standard car, this one actually...

I give you, in all its glory, THE brown bullet

We all start somewhere and god they were small as I was about 2 stone but 6'1 back then :D

Ah I see, I thought you meant just different type of sunroof was installed, not that it actually had a sunroof (from no sunroof installed at factory). That makes it a bit more understandable. Still seems a bit mean though!

It was mean and perhaps they wouldnt get away with that now esp since some cars have 2 pages of options, really difficult for any buyer to know which were factory or fitted aftermarket.
