I just got a Sapphire Radeon HD5850 and im having issues with framerate and slowdown, My CPU is an intel duo @3ghz 3ghz. would it be a good idear to upgrade to a Quad core? is my Cpu causing a bottleneck?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel CoreDuo CPU E8400 @3.00ghz 3.00ghz
2X 2gb Kingston HyperX ram DDR2
Sapphire Radeon HD 5850 1gb
Asus P5KPL-AM mobo
Q-tec 650 Watt PSU

I'd say yes but its boarderline. Either way a quad won't help much, You would be far better off overclocking. You should be able to squeeze a bit more out of of your E8400, close to 4GHz on air.

off topic

I've never heard of that PSU make before. I would be weary of them. OCZ got a good write up in bit-tech/customPC from memory

Don't you experience bsod's, reboots, or other problems ?

I had serious problems with that psu even with a p4 3.4ghz @ 3.9 and a 6600GT years and years ago. The 12V rail would drop from 11.8 on idle to 11.1v under load and my pc couldn't really play demanding games for longer than an hour or so without rebooting.

The in efficiency is not something I care(d) about, but the psu had terribly unstable lines and I couldn't game normally on it.

THANKS you have solved a problem that has been happening for ages now, I upgraded Gpu from 4870 to 5850 because i figured it was that. Im not much good with pc's as you can see.

Surprised the 4870 ran ok-ish on it too, considering that's also quite a beefy card.
With that current spec a 450-500 W well branded ( check for reviews how stable the lines are) psu should easily do ( hell, probably a good quality 400w one would do).

Luckily for the OP the HD5850 1GB has power consumption at load closer to an HD4850 512MB:

The Antec Signature is very expensive but is an excellent PSU:

It is probably OTT for what you have now though!!

I just realised that the OCZ 500W PSU does not have enough power connectors for the graphics card!! :(

I would have a look at the following PSUs too:

my idle temps on my 5850 were 50c with bad
q-tec psu, now they are 32c with Jeantech 500 watt, will keep this in rig till I order one of the psu's you guys have sugested. Great help too thanks, So you think my op about a new cpu is a waste of time?
