I wouldn't.

What if you board doesnt shut it down? keep an eye on it in person.

How long would you do a test for before saying its stable?

If stress testing 15-20minutes is a good time. If it passes that then play a game (one you'd normally play) for an hour or so, that's the best stress test of all. If it passes that your sorted.

MSI gaming and ASUS Strix run passive when idle.

Gigabyte Windforce/G1 Gaming are excellent coolers.

EVGA ACX2.0 is good.

Galax infinity edition seems to be good.

Its the same as installing onto a HDD, so you have all the cables etc.

One thing to avoid is defragging them which you can turn of in windows..

Have you unlocked the shaders on the 6950s?

One 970 won't actually be that much of an upgrade tbh, but the 2 gb of vram will help with some games at the higher resolution.

A GTX970 is over twice as fast as a 6970 - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1061?vs=1355

In fact its more like 3x faster.

So less power draw, less heat, and games that dont scale well with Crossfire will see an immediate jump.
