Do I need to upgrade from a i7 4790k at stock speeds

Really undecided on if I need to drop my i7 4790k, I don't even overclock it because I have not been able to find a z97 itx or m-atx board anywhere. I play the likes of battlefront and battlefield and I have zero issues, in fact the only struggles now are my 1060 starting to not be quite enough because I'm doing more downsampling.

Would I be better off slapping a Vega 56/1070 in my current build or go RYZEN and get the benefits of DDR4 and what not ?

Your CPU is fine. If you overclocked it, it would be better, but as it is, it is still very good for gaming. I'm running one myself with a 1080 and no regrets.

Do you have 16GB of RAM?

Get a 1070. They're great.

The 4790K is a supremely fast CPU for gaming, anyone who has one doesnt really need to upgrade yet (just overclock it a bit)....except if you do anything other than game at the same time (like content creation/2D/3D Rendering).

In that case, a 1800X or overclocked 1700 to 4Ghz you would see some real benefit.

Get a better cooler (if you dont already) and OC that badboy, lots of gains to be had.

If you cant oc on your motherboard then well, i still agree with the rest, GPU first. Keep a look out for a cheap board in the bay or MM here?

Sorry for stalking you but please can you tell me what OC you get with your CPU on the ASROCK Z97 Anniversary mobo

OP says he can't overclock as he doesn't have a Z97 board.

A better cooler would help just to keep temps lower and prevent any chances of thermal throttling. Intel's stock offering is a bag of turds.

Honestly I don't know if a 1070 would provide a massive performance increase over a 1060. Sure graphics card upgrades are always effective but I'd be tempted to wait for Vega 56 AIB cards to release just to get a lay of the land.

My 4790k is still hammering out the frames. Got a 980ti and a 4790k and can maintain 144Hz on High in most games I play (Siege, Overwatch).

As above, I'd focus your attention more on a GTX1070 or 1080.

I had to run my 4790k on stock speeds for a bit recently when my rig was overheating, i found it was still handling everything i played fine, i would probably look at GPU like everyone else says if ya finding you have to turn down settings atm.
