Windows updates slowly but surely uses up harddrive space. I don't mind, but this SP1 appears to be anything from 73.6mb to 892mb. Since I've had every single important windows 7 update automatically since 23rd october 2009, do I need this SP1, does it have anything I don't already have?

Be carefull, i say that as i decided to install SP1 and now my pc wont start windows 7 it just crashes with a split second of BSOD when the animated windows logo appears and i cannot fix it yet i did the same on my laptop without any issue.

I tried a system restore and a start up repair before that but the start up repair is not able to fix the problem and a system restore fails to complete so i am unsure what to do now.

EDIT.. is there any way i can try and start windows 7 in safe mode?

I have a dual boot system on two separate hard drives but this seems have dissapeared since installing a second hard drive and it automatically configouring a dual boot.

It'll keep you supported with updates when microsoft stops issuing updates for virgin W7 (and they will) but since you have all the updates before SP1 was released the download will only be around 80-90MB (although it'll take about an hour to download even though most of the "download" isn't the update downloading).

It installed on my laptop with only one problem with the .net framework optimization tool which was fixed with a repair install of the .net framework 4 client profile.

Right, but, it seems both you and bloodhunter had success on laptops. I'd like to know if anyone else here with desktop pcs have had any problems installing SP1 and BSOD like on bloodhunter's desktop.

Sounds like a clean install to me. :D

Absolutely no issues with the install on the two machines I have done it on, one a desktop and the other a sff desktop.
Both were up to date will all windows patches first, and then the download was 83.9MB iirc. It isn't much space in the grand scheme.

If i go into this all it shows is the recycle bit and nothing else.

EDIT.. i am launching disc clean up when i am in Vista and selecting the affected drive from there but it just seems to show whats on my Vista drive.

Why would you be trying to recover HDD space from a Windows 7 Service Pack using Disk Cleanup in Windows Vista?

You're correct. It's only downloading 87.2MB and is pretty slow, currently at 19% downloaded over the last 8 or 9 minutes. In fact it seems to have paused at 19%.

*53% now, so it's moving along slowly but surely and picking up speed.

If you cleanup the service pack files once you're sure it's stable you'll recover anywhere up to 3GB of space since it removes older hotfixes too.

Yeah, I'll do that Broken Hope, thanks.

Ok, so, it's installed now. No hitches.:)

Windows media player seems to have be reinstalled or something because when I clicked on a movie, the WMP box came up and needed me to click 'recommended' or 'customise', as though it's the first time I used it. However, it seems to respond better now. Before, it took me a few seconds to be able to get buttons to activate or maximise the WMP window, and now it's pretty much instantaneous. Btw, how do I get WMP to always open maximised as it always pops up fullscreen but then immediately goes down to a large'ish window size.

Also, a desktop.ini has been left on my desktop (seen in screenshot) and when I click to delete, it gives me a message 'If you remove this file, windows or another program may not work correctly'. I know its a fairly standard message, but can I delete it safely?

Er..

Disc cleanup showed me about 820mb of service pack files to delete, plus other assorted files, and the total would have been about 1.2GB. Did the cleanup.

C drive before cleanup 705GB
C drive after cleanup 708GB

I installed it yesterday and am happy so far. I also ran the Disk clean up utility and gained back 920mb of storage by deleting the SP1 back up files. NOTE: If you do this you cannot un-install the update.

Over all a happy bunny.

Steve.
