Do I really need a MBP when I have an 24" iMac?

Hey there.

So things didn't turn out great with my uni resits and I'm taking a 1 year leave of absence to get my head straight and the uni are going to let me resit the two exams I failed.

In the mean time I'll be working full time so I'll have a bit of spare cash about (seeing as I don't have to pay council tax).

I recently bought a 24" iMac, which I love. My first mac and I don't think I'll ever go back to windows (just using linux in VMWare for uni stuff).

I was thinking of getting a MBP for when I return to uni.

How heavy are they? I know the specs are on apple's site, but in real terms, can you carry them about easily. How resilient are they (especially to water)?

Also, do I really need one. The only thing I'd use a mac-notebook for is programming (in C for now) either by Xcode or by VMWare-ing linux, as well as light entertainment during boring lectures.

Will a macbook stand upto the challenge or should I be considering the MBP still?

Cheers lads. :)

i had a macbook killed it with a cup of tea and now have a pro i love the pro and say its the way to go i know there is not a lot in the specs but extra battery life very nice faster charge time due to the pros haveing 85w charger and a very nice screen at a better rez

i say get a pro i have been using one for about 5-6 months at uni and love it not to big and heavy get a nice bag and you will be fine i really recommend it

An ordinary MacBook will be fine for programming and entertainment in lectures :p

At £600 with HE discount there's really no point spending the £100s more for the Pro version - especially when you have the joy of using a 24" iMac at home!

my thought exactly. A Macbook will stretch the Apple experience very nicely - without breaking the bank for the MBP. I have an MBP - but then again, I don't have a nice 24" imac to fall back on!

I would go for a MacBook in that situation. Why is it you need Linux for uni work? GCC and all that jazz comes with OSX too you know :-)

It's a slippery slope though.. You'll end up with more macs and apple gear than you know what to do with soon enough :)

Another option (might not be that good) is to sell the 24" iMac and get a MBP + a decent screen to go with it.

Or, just get a second hand Macbook from the bay. £450 should get you a nice one!

and air would be a nice second machine - other than that macbook would be the best idea

Punctuation is overrated.

A MacBook would compliment the 24" iMac quite well and save a bundle of cash, it is also (at least I think) lighter than the MBP.

Unless you really need either the screen size or GPU I wouldn't bother with the MBP.
