do I really need z68 ?

upgrading to an i5 2500k system and was just wondering if I really need the z68 chipset ? dont think I will oc it its only for cod and the new gta when it comes
 
what board did you have in mind? z68 supports ssd caching which is handy,plus onboard graphics if your graphic card decides to die you wont be stuck ect
 
If you absolutely won't overclock your CPU and won't ever get a second graphics card to run in crossfire/SLI then it is a pretty safe bet to go for one of the cheaper boards like the H67 or H61 (though bear in mind that many H61 boards don't come with SATA3 ports).

However, many Z68 boards are pretty good value - like this Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 board for £85. Also, if you want SLI/CF PCIE x8/x8 on a motherboard, then you can get this board for £100.

Personally I would go for a Z68 board, as they are not neccesarily super-expensive compared to the other options and overclocking on these boards is very simple to do and yields nice results (with a 3.3GHz i5 2500K most can achieve ~4.5GHz with a decent cooler and a Z68 board). This kind of overclocking usually allows you to stick with your core system for longer before you need to upgrade.

If you ain't in a hurry then wait and get a Z77 board. Otherwise Z68 are great boards to use tbh, you won't lose anything other than native usb3.

If you do go Z68 ensure you get a GEN 3 version ;)
