My current media player is a modified classic Xbox. It's fine for the screen I have at the moment in the lounge, but that is to be replaced with nice ~40" Samsung panel shortly.. so I need to upgrade the media player.

Requirements are;
  • as close to zero noise as possible
  • small / neat looking
  • remote control
  • easy to use interface
  • fast wakeup
  • iplayer /4od / youtube
  • 1080p
  • streaming various file formats from file server

My file server is located an HP Proliant Microserver that is tucked away under the stairs, all my existing media is stored on there. I'm not really interested in storing anything on the HTPC.

I've noticed that the R3610 is slightly more expensive than the R3700 - a brief amount of googling brings up that the ION2 in the R3700 has some issues with regards to sound. Anyone shed any light on that?

I bought one a few weeks ago and so far its awesome. Still trying to perfect it, but I haven't spent much time with it.

I have a Linux version and just put XBMC Live on there.

as close to zero noise as possible

Mine is near silent!

small / neat looking

About the size of an A5 piece of paper, and mine is tucked behind the TV so you cannot see it.

remote control

I will be buying one soon, so can't comment at the moment

easy to use interface
XBMC is fairly simplistic but just takes time to customise and sort everything out

fast wakeup
I'd say it take 1 minute to 1.30 to load up completely, but I haven't timed it tbh

iplayer /4od / youtube
Haven't tried sorry

1080p
Easily, just watched Game of Thrones at 1080p

streaming various file formats from file server
Waiting for my NAS to get delivered before I can comment :(

I did have sound issues at the beginning. It wouldn't play any sound from my MKV's but after updating everything and changing a few settings it worked fine.

I have one more sound problem, but they are in regards to certain files. Some of my Family Guy episodes go all crackly when playing on the Revo but all other files work perfectly!

Get the R3610 - No real world performance difference, No problems and a eSata port which is a must for a device like this.

the R3610 is more expensive, white (so won't match the telly etc) and I don't care about the lack of eSata port as all my media is on the file server.

I don't like the fact the SPDIF port is on the front though :|

I too find the spdif on the front quite weird. However I use mine with all the things you want to do and it's perfect. I'm running windows 7 with xbmc ontop. For iplayer I just tab out and launch firefox, it's fine with a wireless keyboard with trackpad.

If you want too know anything else just ask and I'll do my best too answer.

what's it like noise wise, does the fan spin vary all the time - or just 'kick in' when needed like a laptop does?

that's a good question, I will be intending to do that - don't want HDD noise :D

It is almost silent, I can't hear it when sitting next too it with no other background noise. Never mind across the room watching a movie. Superman couldn't hear it from across the room.

It's easy to add an SSD, however this will void your warranty.

got one of these a few days ago and very pleased with it now i got rid of the crappy linux it had on
got it mounted on the back of my LG monitor

u could build your own, then u'll get to chose what the case looks like

althou it wouldn't be as cheap most likly

my htpc is totally silent and does everything i need it to, but it cost abit more than a revo would, but that was mainly the cost of the case, althou it does look nice

I've looked at the revos, quite cool. Thing is, I can't justify the price when I can just pick up a PS3 slim pre-owned with 2 year warranty for less, plus it will play blurays out of the box, play PS3 games, and the Sony bluetooth remote is pretty good imo. OK so XBMC is pretty cool and the PS3 is not silent, but they are pretty unintrusive in the noise department imho. If Revo was <£150...maybe.

Again I looked into this, and having spec'd up the parts, it was about 2-3 times the cost of a PS3/Revo. HTPC's are cool yeah but ust don't represent value for money I don't think.

depends what your after really
I wanted silence and to look the part so I went for a decent htpc case which put the price up abit
But without the case it was less than 200 and that includes an ssd.

I just bought a remote to use with my Revo and it worked perfectly and immediately!
Absolutely fantastic!

What remote did you for? Any any you've tried it with Win7 MC or XBMC?

Emprex 3009ARF Wireless Windows MCE Remote Control

Thats the one and I have been using XBMC Live.

There is one small problem, on a keyboard you have that key next to the bottom right ctrl and that brings up a small menu. I like to press that and play all the items in a folder, as I can't get my playlist feature to work.

Apart from the minor gripe its excellent
