For the last few years (when not actually in the mud) I've been mainly (6-7 days a week) wearing these:
SALOMON XA PRO 3D: http://www.salomon.com/uk/product/xa-pro-3d.html

I find them a brilliant shoe, but they only last around 18 months! Rather than buy a third pair surely it's not beyond the wit of man to produce a light, comfortable, grippy shoe that's generally smart enough (when clean!), good for an off-road jog and that lasts 5+ years?

Any ideas?

It's not that I run in them every day, more I wear then 10hr a day every day, around office, garden, town etc... and occasionally run a mile or two.

Can't imagine any trainer would last 5+ years of daily use. Hard-wearing generally isn't compatible with "light, comfortable, grippy". If you're getting 18 months currently then you're doing well.

If you like the ones you have currently just buy a few pairs to stockpile when they're on offer. Or buy something a bit more sturdy (and smart) and keep the salomons just for running?

I really like these shoes too, and coincidentally I have also had a pair for around 18 months now and they are also pretty much totally destroyed. I bought a new lace set but they both have rips and holes now.

Was just going to try some cheap knockoff speedcross 3s but doubt they would last 6 months. Can't bring myself to pay full price for another pair. Think I got the xa pro 3ds for about 60 or 70 quid.

No decent shoe will last 5+ years with daily wear. Rather than spend £100 a throw on trainers, buy a trainer that meets the balance between comfort and cost so you're spending closer to £40 a pair and accept you'll be replacing them once a year. Works out cheaper.

I just circulate between a pair of Adidas Sambas and some nondescript Nike running shoes.

My trainers last me about 6weeks on average at the moment. Running 70-80 Miles a week. Sometimes you just have to accept some products are consumable, like toilet paper
