If i want to connect a HDMI from my PC to my AV reciever, then have a separate DVI cable from the PC to the monitor.

Would that work?
Or does the graphics card have to sync with a display to activate that output?

This is exactly what I do

I play on the 24" dell but the HDMI goes into the AV amp for sound.

In the Monitor settings just chhose the monitor as primary display

Would a HDMI Male (Type A) to DVI-D Male (Single Link) lead possibly do the job ? as I have thought about doing somthing similar myself :)

should do, i use a hdtv as a 2nd screen and that's connected through a dvi to hdmi cable and that outputs video and sound just fine
