Do the prices drop today or not?

Eh?

Just a bit confused over the Q6600 drop?

Dan

The Q6600 labeled "Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail" is at near enough the right price may drop £5-£10 maybe.

The Q6600 labeled "Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient 95W Edition" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - Retail" is the G0 stepping Q6600 which for some ridiculously unknown reason is priced £10+ higher than the other Q6600 currently. No idea if OcUK plan to cahnge the price on it you will have to ask them yourself.

we wont see a drop till monday when the guys are back in the office i would have thought

The Q6600 G0 costs less for stockists to buy than the ones already in stock, so I think it may be OcUK capitalising on the hype, it may drop soon.

I don't think that's correct. As I understand it, as a retailer, you buy a piece of IT equipment from a manufacturer or distributor at a price. If the manufacturer or distributor then cuts that price, they issue a credit note against any unsold stock. If you think about it, if they didn't do that then no retailers would have held any stock at all once Intel announced their price cuts.

G0 is currently vapourware (they're not launched yet) and some retailers are taking advantage of some customers to sell them a product in advance of launch at a premium price. Watch those self-same users grumble when they say their credit cards were debited on the 20th July and they didn't get their chips until September, and even then some retailers get their stock through grey importers so they'll have them a couple of weeks earlier than official channel retailers and the pre-orders buyers will feel even more daft.

The reason for the extra £10 is that Gibbo wasn't able to guarantee stepping without putting someone on duty checking the codes on each processor.

And as you know, employing extra people costs money! :)

and the extra £10 is well worth it if i can get extra 100Mhz on the clock of q6600 on air.

will be buying in September, so hope i can still get G0 with extra £10. a bargain i'd say.

£10? To look at a code on the side of the box when they come in?!

Ok, somebody has to do it, but how many could you check in, say, an hour? 30? 40?...

I know OCUK need to make a profit, but really...

Anyway, there is a lot of worry on here about whether the price will be going down. It's probably safest to assume it will go down over the next few weeks, but not by a huge amount.

If you need the CPU now, are happy with the price, then just go ahead and buy it! :)

The SKU codes are on the delivery notes, so I would doubt that for a shipment of say 2000 CPUs it costs £20,000 to check them all.

I have also been reading that the G0 will actually cost even less, and the price drop is for B3 stock...so it's more than a £10 premium....

Well i ordered from a competitor...not entirely bothered what stepping it is, but if i did want to check where would it be on the retail box?

Look at it this way, there is still a lot of product in channel that is not G0.

If you want a specific stepping picked out for you then be prepared to pay for the effort it takes to keep two otherwise identical SKUs apart from receipt through to shipping.

If you don't want to pay what is a tiny premium for the service and can find somewhere else that is offering a certainty on supplying a G0 then go buy from them.

I dont think its being picked out for you if the delivery note to a retailer says what the bacth is....

But isn't the point that there aren't even any G0 chips in the UK anyway, and nobody knows when they're going to pitch up?

At some point, all the CPU's will be G0 anyway.

The stock is not normally received and stored by stepping, just by SKU.

If you place an order for a Q6600 and they have one on the shelf you'd get it, only you want a specific stepping not just any one off the shelf.

All you are paying that small premium for is so they will hold your order and not just give you the one off the shelf but will wait and watch for the G0 steppings to arrive then use those particular items to meet your order.

You are paying for special treatment.

If you want to wait till the old steppings are not in channel or stock any more so you just place an order with out any special selection then just wait a couple of months.

If you don't want to wait then pay for the service that is on offer.

Tesl, I think everybody has worked out that if you want the G0 from OCUK, you will need to pay the £10 extra.

And, we've also worked out that if you're not happy to do so, you don't have to and you can just order a Q6600 from here or elsewhere, and take pot luck what turns up. As I understand it, what will turn up is a non G0 anyway, as there are no G0 steppings in the UK.

The point was, is it a reasonable charge? £10 seems a bit arbitrary.

Edit: Oh, and don't forget it's £11.75 after VAT will you!

This is not correct - every one of the newly shipped CPUs will be G0 stepping.

That's not my understanding.

If that were the case, why would OCUK be offering a G0 picking service if all the CPU's were going to be G0 anyway?
