Do we use Google too little?

It does disturb me the amount of stuff that gets asked that 30s on Google would provide an answer to.

Even more disturbing is questions like 'How do i make toast?'. Although thats a hypothetical example, i sometimes wonder how some people function in their day-to-day lives ;)

I think the reason some people ask on forums etc is 'cause they'd be none-the-wiser if the information they actually got off Google was incorrect. Atleast on a forum - especially one this size - the chances are if someone's wrong, they'll soon be corrected.

I wonder if i am getting lazy. Someone asked me a hypothetical question at work...

I said... "If i wanted to find out about that, the first thing I would do is ask you... in case you knew and that way I wouldn't have to do the legwork to find out myself... The next thing I would do is to go on this forum and ask others, in hope that I wouldn't have to do the legwork myself... And then finally, if I had drawn a blank, I would look it up myself..."

How many of us are guilty of this?

First place I look for absolutely anything is google, asking here is a last resort when I've trawled through pretty much every last result and drawn a blank. I'm not keen on wasting people's time as I hate it when people waste mine.

it depends on what im after really but quite often you have to search through loads of rubbish before you find the answer, sometimes i know that someone on here will have either first hand knowledge or be able to explain something in a better way than i can find online.

However, if someone asks me a question i dont know the answer to or just cant be bothered to answer i just tell them "google it"

the internet and google are burnt into my head.
i wouldnt want to function without them.
why do i need to think when i have the net and google?

I only use google really when I'm looking at buying something and after specifications or shops with the lowest price etc, although asking others is useful. When I need anything for work, I either go to a specific companies webpage, or use textbooks.

Of course it depends what you want to find out aswell. If you want opinions, google is far less use.

I use google and google news all the time. Often to verify what someones posted in SC, whilst wiki is often good its search is sometimes slow so better to use google to search it, unless what you are after is new enough not to have appeared in googles index yet.

Most of the time I look myself on Google/a website I think may have the answer, then if I can't find anything I ask on OcUK or another forum.

Craig.

I use both, but there is a good reason.

I know many posters here by reputation and by posting, and I know some have specialisation in certain areas (whatever that may be).

Whenever you search the net itself, you often end up trying to work out how valid and useful the information is, you have to try and judge the validity of the source.

By contrast, asking the question on here will often lead to someone who I know has the expertise to give me a good answer, and so I spend much less time reading various links and trying to work out how good the sources are.

It's all about balance.

If I want to find out about something I'll google 'something wiki' where "something" is what I want to know about. 9 times out of 10 the first result is the entry on wikipedia, and that will usually be sufficient for what I want to know.

I rarely will use a forum to find my answer. If I'm having specific motherboard problems for example I will find a "blah blah motherboard" thread and post my problem.

The reason I use google is because you are going to find your answer quicker.

Yes but what if you want to find out something really complicated like how many cms are in one inch? ;)

Darn Otacon for deleting that thread! ;)

To answer the OP and stay OT yes people are in the habit these days of asking questions rather than looking for the answer themselves.

thanks to firefox's little google box up in the top right i use google all the time :D

i rarely take questions to forums unless they're very specific e.g. coding issues because you can't see errors in your own code.

Ask the people around you if they know the answer first. If they do then great, but if they don't then just pretend you knew all along and make an answer up - they don't know the answer anyway.

Problem solved :D :p
