Do you believe, or have young kids who still do?

My lad is 24 so the magic is well and truly gone. But that doesn't stop the fun.

He was hoping to get enough money off everyone to buy an IKEA Markus chair but I've bought it for him. My Mrs is working until lunchtime in A&E tomorrow and doesn't want him to open it until she's back, so ive convinced him the large present is a new suitcase for her with a big picture of his face on one side and the dog on the other with "my babies" emblazoned across it.

Hes given me a disgusted look and gone to bed

This is our first Christmas where neither kids believe. Our youngest, at 8 has been quite adamant this year that Santa is not real.

First year we didn't go to visit Santa either. The age of childlike innocence is over.

But, we've still all sat and watched the Polar Express together in front of the fire.

Our 10 year old asked today why the dog doesn't bark when Santa calls....

We played the 'its magic card' but I am sure she is just playing along. Our 9 year old still believes though.

0 year old knew before last xmas. Heartbreakingly sad that the magic is no more.

Over the year I suggested that Santa doesn't come to 10 year olds.

This he thought made sense, Santa had to stop at some age.

Then a few weeks ago he said he knew Santa wasn't real and that mum was the one that put the mini sweet bags on the tree every night.

Sad times. But another milestone done.

I used to wait until they came to bed, give it 30 mins & go look if they had left stuff out, give it another 30 mins & wake them up, we were all ****** the next day but there was zero chance of sleeping anyway.

Same :)

One time i got told to get back to bed, must have been very early in the morning! I also remember my brother and i taped digital watches to our heads just in case we fell asleep and we missed Santa :)

No-one ever had the chat with me and i haven't with my kids (late teens now). I never felt the need, let them believe as long as they can, even as they get older there is still a little Christmas magic left.

Kids will grow up and experience hurt and disappointment at some point in their lives, **** it, let them hold onto the magic as long as they can - no idea why people feel the need to say anything :(

And another big thumbs up for PnP - did this every year and played the videos on Xmas Eve just to get more excitement for them :)

My two 8 and 9 still believe but they have questioned it before when kids at school have told them he's not real but we just told them those kids were probably naughty so Santa didn't come to them and their parents had to get them the presents instead.

My 9 year old popped the question about the fact that he thought it unlikely that Father Christmas existed when he was 7 so I told him the truth but also told him that there was still a lot of good feeling about Christmas and it was a time for giving blast blaa blaa. My 5 year old is still involved with it all and the 9 year old goes along with it.

I'm not one of those parents that will openly lie to their kid about Father Christmas being real if they openly ask me about it and I know parents that do. Seems a strange decision me.

Wow. Bare faced lying. I just don't get it

My only child was 10 on the 21st and he still believes. Though this will be the last year and I will break it to him long before high school. I will miss his innocence and as an atheist the only reason I enjoy Christmas is because of him.

Strangely he knows I am an atheist and don’t believe in god. So it seems strange telling him that Santa, the tooth fairy and the Easter bunny exist but that god is a total sham.

We told him the last Christmas of primary school, same as quite a few folks. I think 10 is a good age, although it Christmas does lose a bit of its magic once they know imo. Think i was more annoyed at having to kiss goodbye to the Father Christmas phone contact I'd had since he was 3 :(

You did a lot of growing up that year right.
Pretty much. After a few days at my bro and sis dads house, my grandparents took me in and became my guardians. They did their best and I am forever grateful, well at least I am not out and about robbing people or murdering anyone who ****** me off. IIRC, my grandad passed the summer before I started secondary school. That summer my cousin moved in with me and my gran as his mum died along with my parents in the same accident, but he lived with his dad for a few years after before joining us.

Your family have had some awful luck :(
You're right that you could have turned out far worse after that. It's nice that you've turned out to be the person that you are though.

My twin boys have just grasped and are totally engaged with the magic this year being 3. My 12 year old however stopped believing at 9 years old, it all got ruined at school sadly, which will be the case for many kids!

I found out by accident when I was young, maybe 6-7yo, by finding all the presents and its massively knocked the "fun" out of Christmas for me from then on. Firstly, as a child I didn't like being lied to, but more so as an adult where the commercialisation of it just knocks any joy out of gift giving, even when my 70+ Dad still gives me £20 in my card :D

I enjoy the get-together aspect, meeting up with friends/family etc, it's just the Presents side that I've not enjoyed (getting and/or sending).
