Do you blog?

I've got a livejournal. Its mainly used for keeping in contact with people I wouldnt otherwise see (friends at different unis and such). Don't write in it that often nowadays. :o

Don't really understand the point of personal blogs. I do read/use one blog a lot, it isn't his or her life story just interesting links and they seems to think similarly to me because I find most of them interesting.

No, of course not. People who assume their mundane, every day lives are of interest to the rest of the internet obviously have enormous ego's. The stuff i do on a daily basis is so mind numbingly boring to anyone but myseld and my freinds I wouldn't dream of wasting bandwidth on it, and I've got forums if I want to post my thoughts on life.

This tbh.

Read what I said a few posts up.

I did read it.

Most "blogs" that are interesting are, to me, not really blogs and are just websites with updated content.

The blogs i'm (and I guess Fox) talking about are the ones linked in this thread, personal blogs, which are boring. Rob's is no exception. I couldn't care less what books he's reading. Blogs like engadget are owned by AOL and other companies and I don't consider then to be the type of blogs we're talking about here.

I have a blog, but I see it as a diary I type in rather than for an audience. You have to pay to see it, and then only if I invite you, so it's not quite as self indulgent as some.
Any saucy details revealed in this "diary" of yours?

I don't have one but I'm in the process of getting one up. I'm going on a gap year starting in September, off to Japan. It'll be nice to share some of the crazy things I find there, it's an easy way to keep some contact with the people back home, convenient place to put pictures and it'll be a little like a diary of my adventures that I can keep for posterity.

Just need to come up with a clever name for it :D

Error. I have my own blog. I figured it would be a good idea to keep a diary of interesting events and people in my life, especially during my time in the air force. Because my diary is online I can look back on my memories and add to them with ease wherever I am in the world and without having to carry an actual journal around with me. My blog itself is set to private though, meaning it is for my eyes only.

I wont disagree though, it would be a fair assumption the majority of "bloggers" are egotistical and self absorbed :D

I keep some of my stranger thoughts on my website and I post some of it on here. Click in my sig if you want to have a look - don't worry, my life isn't as mundane and boring as Fox's or so I like to think ;)

I had an online diary when I was at school (so about 6 years ago), but I only ever gave the link to a couple of friends. It was just rubbish like "I like <changing guys name>" etc, so I gave it up pretty quickly and have had no interest in blogs since.

I have one at http://sarawallen.blogspot.com/

It's personal, ish.

I always tried to keep a diary as a kid as a record of my thoughts and happenings, but failed miserably as I had no audience. Now I have an audience of absolute random people (some of which friends), and I find it much easier to just jot things down on there as I see fit.

A lot of it is just babble, some ranting, some things I just want to share. I don't ram it down anyone's throat and I don't think it's a very interesting read. But it's a nice record and somewhere for me to vent :)

I was tempted to write a blog on shell/perl scripting and how I work around everyday problems for work and miscellaneous stuff, but then I guessed that no one apart from nerds with hardons for code would read it.
Do :). Technical blogs are, in my opinion, the greatest learning and sharing resource on the internet. Technical articles and tutorials on the web and in print tend to be incredibly stale, while those published from blogs are much more enjoyable to digest as they come with some character, style, opinion and background to them. Funnily enough, I attended a conference yesterday, that I learnt about from a blog, featuring many highly respected people in the industry, of whom I'm primarily familiar with their names and work through their writing in blogs.

I owe a great deal to blogs and bloggers - they're the conduit for all the latest development, thought and discussion in the industry I work in (web development). And it's especially prevalent in an industry that moves so fast and is so widely dispersed. Sometimes feels like trading; requiring an analyst to keep track of what one should be focusing on!

I feel quite strongly that without the advent of blogs, the Web wouldn't be half as adventurous and forward-thinking that it is today. Certainly I feel I wouldn't know half as much as I do if I only had a few dry and limited publications to get relevant information from.

But then, I have a loose opinion of what a 'blog' is - to me it's really any periodical from regular contributers focusing on a single topic or sphere of interest that is published in an informal manner i.e. blogs are the new 'zines. I agree, however, that generic diary-type blogs are of no interest to me and just part of the general Web cruft that one has to wade through. Fortunately they're usually restricted to places like blogger and livejournal, so it's easy to exert a little quality control.

I don't have a live blog right this moment, but as I say, I do read a lot: http://www.bloglines.com/public/beardscratchers :)

I have seen some parts of your original dialogue elsewhere;):p

I do blog, dunno why though as no one reads it, its not interesting, and rarely up to date. Somewhere to keep track of my crazy schemes I guess, and when I get round to it somewhere to note my car project.

If I wasn't so lazy I'd write a small homepage and negate the need for a blog but I'm too lazy, so, I won't.

I'm just paranoid that I'll get people slating me for doing it one way when it should be done another.. :p

I'm not a scripting God, but I have a good habit of being able to get things done. Perhaps I'll reconsider.. Have written handy stuff like IP Address Range generator/counter, Shell ASCII Graphing tools, Cisco Syslog parsers, Cisco Port auditing with expect etc etc :p Not sure how the law works if I've written half of it while at work though (scripting isn't my primary job function, I'm just lazy and like to make things easy!)!
