Hey guys, well I've been quite enjoying minecraft recently after having dipped into it previously and stopping and I wondered just how you lot play.

Personally I really quite enjoy not cheating and mining out the materials. At the same time I don't think I have the patients for large projects. Until recently I had been minding my own mining iron for a minecart system and I got about 200 bars. Then I hooked up with a friend and put my world online and since then we have only been building big things and I've been cheating instead.

The mine cart system I've been able to create as a result of infinite materials is vastly superior and I have thoroughly enjoyed building it, but at the same time I wonder if I would have more so if I hadn't of cheated or if I simply would never have even built it due to the work needed to get the materials.

So what's your take on it, do you mine out your materials regardless of how big you want your castle to be? Do people cheat on big minecraft servers like the ocuk one where if you were to mine for the materials you'd just destroy the world in the process?

Do not turn this into a discussion about if it's cheating or not when the game is ultimately about building structures. Personally I feel you can do what ever you want.

Collecting the resources is half the fun for me, so no I tend not to cheat. I still run with stone tools as iron ore and diamonds are so precious to me:D

Didn't even know it was possible to cheat :p

So no :p

There are several ways, I simply started cheating when I hosted my world up on my own server and thus am the admin so I can do what I want to the world.

I think I might section a part off my world where I don't cheat and start over, but at the same time i've now tasted easy mode I might be tainted for life :'( haha.

Yes I did used to feel that way, I'm unsure now. There are things I want to build and there is also the fact that it some of them would take anywhere up to 1000 blocks to build them.

I too used to stick to iron and stone. My god mining with a diamond pickaxe is A LOT faster haha :P.

I have a world i don't cheat on and one when i just want to jump in and build massive projects.

Why not put it all on one world and just section it off? Or would temptation be too great :P haha.

I played on a server i built a massive caslte made out of sandstone took me ages but every one else was cheating so it spoiled the wow factor of a lot of the stuff they had built.

In the end they wanted money towards server cost and i didnt want to play on a server where everyone cheated.

So my castle remained unfinshed :(

I think it spoils a lot of the game, they had it on daylight constantly, spwaning items and stuff it really takes the fear out of death and the joy out of finding a good haul of resources that you need.

Yeah I do feel the wow factor of my giant minecart system was some what demimished. I think in the end I probably needed another 100 iron to complete the tracks and probably another 400 smooth stone.

I suspect I might start over again where I make mini projects in an area which I worked for all of it and build a roller coaster and stuff like that on the cheating one as I want to use a lot of glass and lava etc and it may go horribly wrong if I take short cuts isntead of cheating :P.

True that, i've currenty got mobs set as off on my sever. Means you can't die evenfrom falling damage really as your health regenerates. Can't drown either.

At the same time I think mobs might have destroyed what I was doing and due to it being so complex with redstone logic gates i'd of rage quit!

why not just play creative mode, where you have access to unlimited quantities of all materials? :p

I get slaves to help me on big projects, it's why I play mp. :p

You should come play on the ocuk server mate :)

No cheating :p

I'm torn to be honest. Made my first big tower, dungeon, mine and waterfall system by digging resources with mobs turned on, and it was a lot of fun. But for some of the stuff I'm thinking of doing now having to deal with the massive amounts of stone required, never mind protecting it from mobs and stuff would just be a pain in the rear.

Just scouting out a decent location has been a pain with night time coming around so quickly.

you could always build a cobble stone generator

you have to manually "mine" the cobble it produces but it means you can build it in a room ,then during the night just safely mine out stacks of cobble easily and quickly

Haha this is true but I play with a friend so that is why I play survival. However he would much rather cheat and I would rather not really. However if he is going to help me on my project and cheat then I might as well too otherwise it's meaningless.

You must have huge underground farms for wood and cobble stone then? You know I might join you guys on that server some time after my exams. I do greatly enjoy team work and provided I had my own area where I could easily get the materials I wanted I'd be content, though if it was miles out I might not as I';d like people to see my work too haha :P.

On the ocuk server do you lot have minecarts to get to places in the map? I noticed skyrails are banned so I presume you have to make the minecarts go down to bedrock to prevent them getting in the way of peoples projects?

This is a good idea, I presume you do it by having water and lava constantly flow into each other? Though I'm unsure as to how you make it so you get cobbles and not obsidian. I think it's water ontop of lava gives cobbles and lava ontop of water gives obsidion?

just a huge map :p

although a cobble generator only needs a tiny square. but atm my current project involves digging out a 2million blocks cavern, lots of slavlings and tnt helping things along though.

It's a big map lots of uninhabited space.

Here's the latest map renders

that top corner that's missing, gets periodically deleted about once a month so there's always fresh materials (although so far that's not even been an issue because of the size of the map)

Nah we just found the 1 block wide walkways to be ugly and annoying, so mine carts typically run in either tunnels (easier to make and make mob proof so a lot of people use them) or along large nice looking bridges with support columns and a decent width rather than a 1 block wide line in the sky.

water touching flowing lava = cobble (so once that cobble is removed it makes another cobble)

water touching stationary lava turns that lava block into obsidian removing the obsidian however does not make another as the lava source has been destroyed.

I generally don't when playing my survival mode as that's my main focus.

Occasionally I'll want to try out new mechanisms like bridges, pistons, various wiring, etc. So I'll load up a random world and give myself the materials to test build them.

So my official answer would be no, I only use the cheats as a sandbox to test designs to avoid making a mess in my real world.

A mate and myself are building a large economy based MC server for our GW2 guild, we use admin abilities to spawn blocks and such for the main "government" buildings. IE, transport network. Grand exchange. Bank vaults. etc

As for our own houses and projects. those are done legit. And any other users on the server have no super admin abilities :)

How does PVP work on servers? A server where you have two teams wouldbe kinda cool but I can imagine it would just turn into greafing the moment it's opened to public. You'd have to cover the walls of your castle with water to stop tnt attacks and put a big base of obsidian in to stop underground assults with tnt traps in it too as a warning so you can hear if they mine under you.

There are some very impressive buildings on that server. How comes some people build so far away where no one else will ever venture and see?

Or are these traps and what not for TNT? I made my own trap in my world but then we started cheating so it was ultimately pointless haha.
