Always, especially on milk and bread. We go to town once a week (37 mile round trip) so the stuff we buy has to last at least that long.

Remember to leave the shell on for the float test, though.Actually eggs I’d eat well past their date keeping them in the fridge, only cos you can do that test putting them in water tho...

...I check all the dates on chilled/bakery stuff, not on frozen or tins or any other ambient stuff tho
1 day past the date is max for me and I don’t really trust the ‘use within 3 days of opening‘ type advice so either have the same thing two days in a row or freeze the rest after opening
Forget that, just use the burger flipper to cut the packet mince into size (roughly the size of the patty), take it out.
Straight into a hot pan, smash it down and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Always! It's not worth it on high volume stuff - milk/loaves of bread. But on other stuff it can make a big difference having a couple of extra days.
