Do you declare your mods?

1+ for declaring mods if the car is stolen or damged then you will want to get paid out. I heard some where not sure if it was true or not but insurance companies where looking through maxpower etc and taking down number plates and looking through their records.

No, all OEM parts anyway which were available as options.

This, bar the optional extras as mine is a base spec ST220. Which actually comes with a fair bit of kit apart from parking sensors (i'm a man so don't need them) and sat nav (already got one)... ohh and Xenons. (want :()

Only mod I did (in process of doing) is an exhaust system change that offers no increase in power (the bike is restricted anyway), which was £0 all together with e-bike. Nice :)

can entirely believe this as somebody on the vxr forums got caught after their car was featured in total vauxhall

Nope. Couldn't be arsed listing every single option from the factory, and have since retrofitted a PCM unit and fitted uprated brake hoses.

If it was fitted at the factory why would you declare it. It's not an aftermarket modification.

And there you see is where the confusion lies.
Just because it was fitted "At the factory" does not mean that it is standard or a mod that need not to be declared.

OK, let me give you a quick example.

Skoda Octavia vRS.
The standard lights are just projector, not HIDs.
These standard lights make up the standard specification of this vehicle - if you ordered it "at stock".
However one of the factory fit options is HIDs.
I decide I want them, they are fitted at the factory, they are an OEM part etc.
However this is still a modification to the basic Octavia vRS specification.
The value and extra expense of repairing the HIDs has not been taken into account when the insurance group/value of the car was worked out.

So although the HID option is a factory fit, OEM part, an insurance company still needs to know about them as an "extra" as they are above and beyond the base specification for that model.

the only non standard thing on my DC2 is the air filter & intake system, declared that and it added about £30

I'd rather KNOW I'm covered

yes... but i mean to what level of detail...

for instance on my last car i didnt declare my Nismo oil billet, or rad cap.. or SS exhaust manifold (that was right at the front of the motor!!) i crashed it, they paid out.. i wasnt happy with the repair, so i had an independant adjudicator inspect it and he didnt say anyting about it either!

However, the car wasnt worth much....

my new car i have had a TTE rear backbox put on, and i have declared that to my insurers straight away as a factory option, which it is...

now as to whether they would ever know that i just added a 22mm roll back in place of the oe 19mm...? im not sure how they would?

also, is ignorance a defence?

say the previous owner had fitted uprated brake pads, new owner did not know and the car was crashed... fault non-attributable to the brakes...what happens then?

my only current mods are changing the colour of the backlights in the dash which ive not declared

and the exhaust.

Ive declared the exhaust this time round, primarily because i know the car is so rare nobody is any the wiser anyway. Not even the dealer has spotted the exhaust is different on the several trips its been in. Probably because when i was enquiring about buying one, all of the staff said they'd never seen one.

My renewal is comming up shortly though, and im going with a mod friendly insurer like adrian flux and greenlight, and will declare both, and the remap im due in for in a few weeks.

Is your gearbox fixed now?

If it was fitted at the factory why would you declare it. It's not an aftermarket modification.

unfortunately some insurance call centre operatives arent exactly sure of this. You would think so, but the answer to this question changes depending on who you speak to

ive never actually manage to establish beyond reasonable doubt who'se right.

Is your gearbox fixed now?

yup. got the call at lunch time today to say its ready :)

I've declared mine with Flux, and the guy on the phone said any more mods wouldn't add anything to my premium provided they don't increase the power output - obviously I'd check with them before doing anything else but that sounded pretty good to me :)

I have a K&N air filter on the air box, but that's it - not that it does anything anyway without an induction kit, so I haven't declared it. If I decide on the induction kit then I'll declare that.

Nice, what was the issue in the end?

they cant diagnose

Dealership arent qualified to service the gearbox. As far as vauxhall luton are concerned, its not a servicable part. If a warranty car has issues, you replace the whole gearbox rather than taking it apart and looking for dropped cogs or broke synchros etc..

No mods on my car but if I did do it then I'd declare it anyway. For the sake of a few quid it isn't worth risking the payout if you crash.
