Do you even cardio?

I have seen some of the different thoughts behind the 'fallacy' and generally ignore them, because wide grip is ruinous for my lats (DOMS is horrendous) whereas narrow grip hits teres (major/minor) and other good stuff... However, if it is different for another person... I am for whatever works. :)

And adding weight is just hilarious. Do it. :D

I'm still kinda on the fence about adding weight vs going wider. Last routine I added 5kg in my normal grip width. I might try going wider next time as I am pretty sure that I feel my lats more for a given weight when I go wider (from previous experience of lat pull downs).

I often start a back session with wide grip pull ups, and finish with close grip chins in the same session! I find chins to be a nice crossover exercise to biceps.

Decent enough core/chest day today. Pretty pleased with the chest numbers, I'm so very close to my goal of 60*5*5. I reduced the weight for the last set because I'd rather do 5 reps of 55, than 3/4 of 60.

I did direct ab work in a serious way for the first time. I bloody hate ab work, it feels like someone stabbing me in the stomach. But seeing my abs with a pump afterwards made it worth it!

BB Bench 5*60 5*60 5*60 5*60 5*55
Deadlift 3*120 3*125 3*127.5 3*130 3*132.5 3*125 3*125
DB Fly 12*10 12*10 12*10
Skull Crusher (EZ) 5*10 12*7.5 12*7.5
Abs: (10 crunches 10 toe touches 30s plank 5 hanging knee raise [no rests]) *3

It was my birthday on Friday and birthday funtimes meant that I had a whole two days off exercise (Sat & Sun). I also got very drunk on Saturday night, and my diet was poor. It's only my birthday once a year, so what the hell eh?

Arms and shoulders today, it went quite well:

Military press 10*30 10*30 10*30
Upright Row 10*27.5 10*27.5 10*27.5
BB Curl 8*20 8*20 8*20
DB Front Raise 10*7.5 10*7.5 10*7.5
EZ Skullcrusher 12*7.5 12*7.5 19*7.5
Hammer Grip DB Curl 12*7.5 12*7.5 12*7.5

I'm in a funny place with skullcrushers. I can only go up in 2.5kg incriments, and can easily rep 7.5kg+bar (hence that last set of 19!) but when I previously went up 10kg+bar I could only manage 5 reps. I think next time I'll go for the heavier weight and maybe do more sets. I think also my tris were more fresh today because I had only done military press, and not benching.

No I've not, but I've looked at their numbers and their Wilks scores are very impressive!

During term time if my college gym gets too busy, I might consider it. Otherwise, it's hard to justify paying for a gym 2 miles away when I have a free one <100 metres away.

I didn't realise you had to pay extra. Fair enough.

It's worth seeing if any of them train at your college though, SOME of them are good lifters.

Hockey training this evening.
My increased fitness really did show during this. Bring on the first match of the season on the 14th!

4/9/13
Rock climbing (bouldering) for the second time.
If anyone is looking for a creative way of training their forearms/ grip strength, then bouldering is it. It's an hour or so (as much as you can take) of clinging on by your fingertips, alternated with stretching your forearms out because they are hurting so much. It's great. I'm enjoying this so much more now than I would have a few months ago, because I am able to use my upper body strength to get to tricky bits (due to my complete lack of climbing skill).

The wall at Oxford (Brookes sport centre) is a bit disappointing compared to the place I went to last time in Bristol, though. So I doubt I'll be going terribly often. I went with the girlfriend and she struggled to find routes to suit her, and there weren't terribly many for me either. I have some friends who climb (and are better than me) so might go with them if they offer.

I went out on the bike this afternoon because I was having a **** day with so much stuff going wrong, so wasn't being productive at work anyway, so why not?

Well I'll tell you why not, it started off really well. And kinda went down hill. My bike ****ed me off twice by dropping the chain (once in either direction) then I messed up the route that I intended to take (only slightly annoying). Then, the second time ym chain dropped I absent mindedly wiped my oily hand on my new bibshorts... not usually a problem, but I chose the white panel on my brand new, expensive bibshorts, which are now stained.

The riding itself was going okay until about the 2/3 point where I realised that I just couldn't be bothered. I slowed to practically a crawl, heartrate <130 because I just had no motivation and was spending my time going over all the **** from the day in my head. I picked it up again eventually and managed to get home before nightfall (okay, slight exaggeration). Final stats were 32miles at 15.7mph average, so about 2mph average below what it should be for that route.

Oh well, most of the oil came out without any stain remover (I need to go buy some). The biggest issue on my mind is now resolved, and the girlfriend thoroughly cheered me up in the evening.

Bring on lifting today! It feels like forever.

Quite pleased with my lifts today. I decided to do DB Bench press for the first time in forever and am pleased with my numbers. My numbers are progressing nicely on the other exercises too.

OH Pullups 5* +7.5kg 5* +7.5kg 5* +5kg 5* +5kg 5
DB Bench 5*25 5*25 5*25 5*25 5*25
DB Row 10*25 10*25 8*25
DB Fly 8*12.5 8*12.5 8*12.5
BB Standing Curl 8*20 8*20 10*20
EZ Skullcrusher 8*10 8*10 12*10

I went for my second ride with a new club (Zappis) this morning. I accidentally ended up in a group which was a bit too fast for me! After 30 miles at 19mph average I was gassed! So, after a nice refreshing can of coke on a bench in front of a pond in Thame, I did another 20 miles on my own at a rather more sensible pace!

With the group (+4 miles solo)

I was supposed to get out on the bike with my girlfriend yesterday, but because all we managed was a mile down the road before it started throwing it down/ hailing, and she had no wet weather gear, then later on she no longer felt like riding.. frustrating.

Anyway, today I was travelling up to my parents' for the week. I won't be lifting but I will, hopefully, do plenty of cycling. This afternoon's short ride was:
17.1miles
55.53 minutes
18.4mph average
814ft climb
175 average HR (probably skewed by it reading >200 in error for the first few minutes)

On Tuesday I went for a potter on the bike with my mum, which was slow and included a stop for lunch. It was a bit breezy on the way back too.
38 miles
2000ft climb
14.3 mph average

Today I got out on my own for the morning. I'm pretty pleased with my pace. There were a few lumps, and one pretty big climb (category 3)
51.7miles
3000ft climb
16.7mph average

Another potter with my Mum today. We went to Ellsmere for lunch.
52.5 miles
2000ft climb
14.6 mph average
128 average HR

We split to go different routes for the last 5 or so miles, so I got to hammer them which was good fun.

Just a quick one yesterday. It was wet and windy and I didn't feel particularly fast. I only really went out to stretch my legs and to chase a couple of strava segments really.

Anyway
21.7miles
1400ft climb
16.6 average

On the segments I was chasing I got two 6ths and a KOM :)

I won't be riding today I don't think, it's ridiculously windy up here!
