I am everywhere...
I am outspoken in real life and I hate the feeling of injustice, I suspect this is what has made me do what am about to tell you several times and the need to do it again if it happens....whenever again. Either that, or am just having a subconsious wish for death (or stupid)

Five or Six years ago.....
I was driving in stockwell (one way system) when I saw a black guy dashed passed and like some few seconds later a security man and other men in uniform giving a chase.
Instinctively, I knew the guy was either a shoplifter or a thief. So i parked my car and asked one of the guys giving chase what it is all about. You wont belive it - The guy been chased snatched a bag after the manager did some "till change over" for all the till and was getting ready for accounting. It was a total of 15grand

I told the occupant in my car that i would be right back and started heading in the direction of the whole chase. After a few yards or so running, i saw the security guard - he was phleming and bent double at this point and tired. He told me the direction the dude headed - inside an estate. I told him to come that the thief is tired as well and it aint too far.

So i set into the estate (not knowing that the guard didnt followed me) and after several minutes of "trying to think like a thief" I saw the guy whom everyone was after with a plastic bag in his hand.

I walked over to him - at this point, my training of kick boxing and the bits i remember from jujitsu came back to me - and then ask him to drop the monies and walk away but then he rained down abuses of rasclat and bumberclats on me (then I hardly understand yardie talk i was still kinda fresh in the country), he also called me a disgrace or something to that effect.

At this point, i was pretty much calculative and at the same time scared that i might have bitten more than i can chew. He walked round the corner and then i follwed him. At this stage, he was at a dead end with a high fence and im facing him on the other side.

He then put his hands in his pockets, i for once thought he was gonna bring out a gun but to my relief it was a nokia phone and he proceed to dial someone to come and help him. He then made a mistake that gave me the upper hand, he turned his back on me during the phone call period!

I saw this as my que so i kicked his legs around the ankle on the sides and down he went! I then jumped on him and punched him and the phone off his face. While this was going on, i was shouting for help. During the struggle/fight, i overpowered him and took the bag off him but with me still managing to sit on top of him - I have never saw so much monies in real life like that, there was twenties and tens (plus some 50s iirc) everywhere in the bag.

To cut a long story short, people came to my aid and the guy was handed over to the police. The whole ordeal lasted about 10mins and it felt like 10years.

However, I belive the person he called saw me and since i havent been to stockwell. The police escorted me to my car and i left the scene.

On getting to work, no one would belive my story that i single handly stop this guy and the money was returned until the police came to my work place to take statements! One of my work mate called me a fool and i should have taken the money and run while the dude is on the floor.

I was offered a Police protection form to feel in just in case but I never went to court for it.

The thing is most people who are around me thinks am still stupid as i never got any thank you from the store and it was a stupid thing to do. I swear to god, this is 100% real, no lies or fiction. The store in question is Iceland in Stockwell. The only good thing was that the police asked me if i have ever consider joining the force! :p

I have always wanted to say this but i put if off due too much typing to do.

My questions are: Anyone done something like this before, Is this a stupid thing to do and why do i still want to do such thing e.g, It nearly happened again yesterday in foresthill - similar circumstances but the shoplifter escaped. I was frustrated with myself for not coming off the bus on time......I have a feeling i might end up dead one day.

Really?

You have some courage to do something like that, I've never been in a situation like that myself. How long after did the adrenaline cut off. :p

I'd be scared, because a lot of theifs have contacts, and when they come for you, that's it.

I recon i would be capable of such a thing but with a young daughter and another on the way i wouldn't risk it. One shot or stab and your dead.

I dont know weather to say you are brave or stupid :p

fair play dude you rock :D

youre lucky it turned out ok but it could have led to serious injury or death on your part

cool as **** story to tell your grandkids
i trained in muay thai for 5 years on and off and its saved me from getting a slap from young chaves a few times over the years, mostly from neutralizing crazed drunken yobs who want to beat me ;)

but again if this is true, "soldier you deserve an award"

:p

I wasnt a dad then and during the whole incident, i didnt think i would die except at the point where he put his hands in his pockets.

Thats what insurance is for, I would never try to stop a shop lifter or bank robber, a bank got done over just before xmas here and they had a shotgun and blasted some shells into the cop van, if they will do that to cops what will they do to a have a go hero.

I would try and stop someone getting mugged or attacked by trying to scare them off, I remember me and my dad walking home from the pub and 2 lads where fighting and one of them lost his glasses and couldnt see proper so we stepped him and broke them up.

If its true then good on you :)

You know, no one has ever belived me whenever i mentioned this incident. Even my work mates as at the time wont, until polcie arrived asking of me.

Very impressive story mate. I can't imagine what I would have done in the same situation. Got out of breathe before i got anywhere near him probobly :p

This is exactly or part of what am trying to ask......A simialr thing happened in foresthill yesterday, came off the bus, gave a chase but the dude escaped. I dont know why but i just kinda get kicked into this mode and react without thinking.

What got me to react yesterday was due to the fact that people were standing by watching the whole thing - security man rugby tackling the shoplifter and no one moved an inch to help..

You should join the police force, they'll soon have that noble desire to do good for the community drilled out of you! :)

My cousin is training to be a Garda (police officer) over here. On one of his first active training days he was brought along to a bank robbery. His sergeant and partner went in the side and told my cousin and his training partner to wait out front because they didn't think he'd try going out the front.

Low and behold out comes to bank robber with a bag and my cousin just steps up and floors him with a punch to the chin. Needless to say he was marked well for that day. Turned out there was over 100K worth in the bag the robber had.

Good on you El but to fair it was a stupid thing to do, especially round Stockwell/Brixton etc. Like you said he could have pulled a gun out or a knife and you could have found yourself in a right pile of poop.
