Do you get on with your touch screen phone?

I've got a Nokia 5800 and find it ok for typing but it's definitely more of a task than on a phone with an proper button keypad. Some of that may just be the phone but for instance whenever I've used the iPhone for sending messages I tend to end up hitting the wrong keys, whether that means my thumbs are too big (unlikely), I'm just being clumsy (quite possible) or I just need to get used to it I'm not sure but if the iPhone is the pinnacle of on-screen keyboards I'm not unduly impressed.

I have the 5800 and its just as easy to use as any button phone, normally i would be wanting to change phones by now but it's just a really good phone and i could use it blindfolded i think :)

There are a couple of rules:

  • Capacitive touchscreen > Resistive
  • Finger-operated > stylus-operated
  • Real keyboard > touchscreen
  • * > Windows Mobile keyboard

The iPhone and HTC Hero tick three of the boxes. They're good.

I really liked the keyboard on my TyTN, and was very worried about going to a virtual keyboard from that. Howver, while I'm not as quick as I was on the real keyboard (which wasn't particularly quick), I get on with the iPhone keyboard pretty well, and a whole load better then I used to be with numeric/predictive keypads.

I just with I could be a little more dentle with the screen. I'm sure I push far too hard (I'm used to the resistive touchscreen on the TyTN).

Touchcreen all the way, I went from the K850 which had a couple of touch screen buttons (and I wanted more!) to the HD and I find it so easy to use. I can typle much faster with a full qwerty touch screen than a standard numeric keypad and as I couldn't type without looking on the keypad looking at my HD while typing is no different. I turned off all the noise and vibration functions too, they were just annoying. As for going back to a small screen again, what a pain, I don't think i'll ever be able to go back to something with less than a 3 inch screen (I can reach everything on the screen of my HD with one hand, although I have big hands).

I think someone hit the button with the comment that touch screens have to be very good or they can get annoying, moreso than a normal phone. I don't think I would be able to stand a slow and unresponsive screen!

Resistive screens are in fact more accurate, so I disagree.
Finger operated, all the way! I've had a couple of people used to WM on older phones get the stylus out and start typing on my HD, it's soooo slow (and pointless)!
50/50- A decent touch screen keyboard is practically as good as a real keyboard IMO.

WM keyboard is rubbish, but then no newish phones actually use it any more so you're safe!:p

As above I'd disagree - my resisitive touchscreen on the Xperia is far more precise and responsive than any capacitive... I can use both finger and stylus with ease depending on what I want to do.

A real keyboard is the best but theres a couple of onscreen keyboards that work quite well for the xperia for quick typing.

Resistive is more accurate, capacitive is more sensitive. You takes your choice (oh, and you can't use a stylus on a capacitive screen - which is a plus point in its own right :D).

I love the keyboard on my Hero. I'm now as quick on it as I was on my E71. Had really bad touch screens on other phones like the N97 and Samsung 8910HD. Hate phones with a stylus. They are just slow.

More sensitive, but not by much. And why is not using a stylus a plus!? It would make pressing those little balls and buttons in games impossible and far less accurate, you'd end up having to go with the "My first" fisher price games you get on so many platforms.;)

Not sure why not using a stylus is a plus... I have a full on image editing package installed on my phone amongst other things - using the stylus I can edit images almost as well as I can at a desktop... aside from not have as much screen estate.

I have an HTC Touch Pro ( TMobile Vario IV ) and I use the slide out QWERTY for texting, using the screen to text even with a stylus is a pain. The touch screen functions for everything else are fine albeit the TouchFlo 3D system can be a little "clunky" at times requiring a reboot.

But then again, I suspect the "clunkiness" is down to TouchFlo 3D/WinMo rather than the actual phone itself.

HTC Hero and I get on very well with it. I have vibrate on button press though. I did manage to call the same person twice while the phone was in my pocket and I was driving though...

Love my htc magic - will always get a touchscreen phone from now on. So much easier to use and navigate with. Whenever I see a screen now I always assume I can change things by touching it!

I have a samsung i900 omnia. I dont like the touch screen at all, it's one where you have to press it rather then just touch like my ipod is. I get on my my ipod screen just fine.

Next phone will defo have hardware buttons.

Storm 2 user here...i have 2 of them at the moment but ones going back to Voda on monday as it seems a bit more glitchy than the other one i have.

Have to say im very very impressed with the Storm2...i thought it would be hard to type on but new storm is much much better than the original one which i thought was utter rubbish...the storm2 is what the original storm should have been.

Typings a doddle becuase instead of one big button sitting under the screen...it now has 4 piezo buttons...so its capactive when you make the selection but sort of resistive when you 'click' on the selection...dont know if that makes any sense.

Prefer it over the Magic i had earlier this yr and even the iphone, which i just couldnt type on accurately but with the Storm2 its very easy...in fact im at the same speed on the Storm2 that i am at on my Bold...about 40wpm.

Awesome device.

Current X1 user here, and I get on very well with my touchscreen. Moving to an HTC HD2 end of next week, and really looking forward to the massive screen and capacitive screen.

Never used capacitive before, but I'm looking forward to it.

I've been looking for one of those for a while, what's it called?:)

Does it still use the clicky screen or have they got rid of that monstrosity?:p
