Do you guys keep a back up PC?

main rig is e6600 ...8800gts.... 2gig

secondary which my kid uses is a64 3700+...7800gt....1 gig ram

third is a64 3000+...6800gs...1 gig ram ..but only really gets used when ppl come round and we network to play some css or rts games

laptop is core2duo with 2 gig but its an absolute joke trying to play any games on it.....the a64 3000 with 6800gs is far far better. the 6800gs isnt a bad card considering how old the 6800 series is but the a64 3000 cpu is really showing its age.

I always keep 2 desktops (games machine and a backup) and have 1 laptop. I seem to have a cycle worked out where I build a new games machine, my previous games machine becomes the backup, and I flog the old system to help pay for the upgrades. I tend to use my backup machine for work type stuff such as running loads of VM's or playing around with stuff like linux, but it is nice to have it there if my games machine dies on me. I also tend to keep a few spare disk drives and a half decent gpu just incase. Currently got 4 SATA drives and a 7800GTX sat on a shelf.

Main - AMD X2 4400, 2gb, Nvidia 8800GTX, 2x74gb Raptors, 2x320gb Sata.
Backup - Athlon64 3700, 2gb, 2x160gb Sata, Nvidia 5200 (Currently using this rather than my spare 7800GTX because it is quiet).

It's about time I upgraded though, my current main machine is getting on a bit CPU wise now, might have to place an order once I get Xmas out the way :).

Can build a lot of spare pc's. dad owns a small pc company, can always rebuilt a nice speced machiene if my own fails.

Never back up any of my 5 hdd's though, always trust em :p.

My 5 year-old laptop is my back up pc, it's got mobile P4 2Ghz, 512Mb, Geforce 4 mx and 15". Battery lasts like half hour =/ still going strong though

I have my Dell 630m notebook. About 18 months old, still works perfectly though, and is getting a fair bit use now that I'm doing so much uni work at the library these days.

Also got all of my documents, photos and music backed up on a 120GB WD Passport drive. Handyy little thing, as it also means I can just take my notebook, the Passport drive and my new Logitech VX Nano mouse anywhere and I've essentially got everything I really need. I just take that stuff if I ever go home to see the parents.

Yes I keep 2 back up pc's and a laptop.

Normally my main rig is for gaming and such and the second one that sits to my left is for msn, burning that kinda thing.
3rd one is an old pc just incase the other 2 die as i hate being without the internet.
My laptop is mainly used for work but every so often it finds it's way onto my desk and i use it instead of the 2nd pc as it closer and i don't have to reach as far to use msn.

If all of these packed up at the same time I wouldn't know what to do with myself.

I have a 2nd.

Socket 939, 3000 single core CPU
some random cheap mobo (cant even rememebr which one)
1GB PC3200 Generic RAM
and 3x 80GB HDD

Is used currently as a file server, and downloader!

I dont have a back up as such, but I do have a HTPC in the living room, kids PC and a laptop. None of them are good enough to play new games tho and I only tend to upgrade my main PC.

have an old athlon 1800 xp rig with agp graphics which im considering upgrading with a cheap mobo/cpu/ram bundle and pcie graphics card, would be handy to have if my main rig was down for any time.

i dont have a spare 1 built but if i did need one i have enough parts to build one

AMD Opteron 144
Asrock 939Dual-Sata2
1 GB G.Skill ZX
XFX 7800GT EE

plus probably enough leftover after that to build another system.

My Collection... :D

- Main Gaming rig [See Sig]

- Secondary PC, Use for Ubuntu/Mint Linux [A64 3000, 1Gb Ram, 9800Pro]

- File/Ventrilo Server on 24/7, No monitor or keyboard. [Celeron 1Ghz, 512mb]

- MacBook [C2D 2.0Ghz, 2.5Ghz 667 Ram, Leopard]

Recently my new high end gaming machine died on me. Bought it back in april from here and cost a fair bit. I make a living from using my pc so its very important for me. Good thing I had a good trusty back up pc ready to go.

Just wondering if anyone else keeps a back up pc spare incase your main one dies? If so, what spec is it?

I've had my spare pc since 99. Still works like a charm. Only good for simple operations, like word, internet ect.

EDIT: Posted in wrong forum. Meant to post in general forum. Sorry.

Dude what happend to it? Iirc i brought my machine the same day as you from here! I hope mine isn't about to die :s

Always a good idea to have a backup no matter what you do.

I got a mate who has a PC and he got me to teach him a little about RAID so he could have a backup.

Ok, I thought, thats not a bad idea I suppose...

What really makes me laugh however, is that he has taken this to be litteral.

He now has a dual core, 2 sticks of RAM, runs SLI and has 2 DVD Drives... Because if any one of those fail... The PC can still run on the other????

You got to laugh.

Anyway on a more normal note, I have a number of PCs and I always have backups. I am also lucky in that even if all my PCs connected to the LAN all suddenly died, I also have enough components to rebuild myself up a decent PC again.

I have got a backup pc, I decided to have one after my memory died on my main rig, I used to use my laptop but that's relegated to college work now.

Ironically, the PSU has blown in my backup pc :p

Xeon 3210 / P5K Del / 4gb corsair / x1900xtx / dvdrw / 320gb / lianli pc7b + tagan 580w

All data is backed up onto a file server. :)

I have a laptop and two other machines which act as servers for different things.

My main PC stores all of my data though, so if that goes down, I'll be in exactly the same situation as if I didn't have a backup machine. I am however in the process of speccing up a RAID array in one of my servers so that I can keep a backup of all my music and important files.

I am thinking of building a backup PC. I need my PC for my work so if it fails etc i have nothing to use. I have some spare bits lying around but would need to buy a couple of things to complete it.
