i know the correct way is to right click down on the icon by the clock, then safely disconnect, but do you just pull those USB drives out ? Or do it the proper way?

Jim

Depends on the device. If it's new or I'm especially proud of it that week I'll go to the effort of pressing the icon - will always do so if it doesn't belong to me too. Otherwise, yank it out.

Only yank it out if your using Windows XP because if your using a memory stick, or USB HDD with 2000 or 98 is sometimes does not write all the data untill you either shut down your computer OR safely remove the device

Edit: slip of the finger SORRY!

You can set the device in performance or quick connect mode. Performance mode means you may damage it if you remove without stopping the device, quick connect means you can yank it whenever.

What is it with people today quoting typos and forgetting to remove them in the quote  :p

My Computer > Properties of device > Hardware tab >Properties button > Policies tab

I can't choose on this device at the moment, but I've had the option before.

I never do it with my USB HDD now because it has been corrupted so many time I've lost count. I can recover it with partition magic but it's just trouble. With memory sticks I have the fast removal option selected. I think hardware manufacturers should add a "stop" button to their devices which does it for you rather than clicking the system tray or "eject".

Usually i safely remove them... except...

I have the Medusa 5.1 USB Headset, and if i turn it off in the middle of using it, playing a game or listening to music.. good bye PC, hello BSOD. Annoying sometimes you can imagine.
