Do you listen to music during your rides?

I prefer to have all of my senses available so I don't listen to anything. the amount of peds and cyclists that don't have a clue what's around them because they are listening to music is stupid.

Yeah, but on longer rides 1-2 hours of constant riding, don't you get bored? I do and I can't be asked to buy ear plugs either. So I just use my in-earphones to work as ear plugs and stereo.

I don't bother on short rides though, especially when travelling around town...

I have a bluetooth headset and listen to LBC on my ride into work and various music on the way home. The speakers are placed near my ears but don't block out noise like earphones do only problem is that I can't hear much above 50mph.

Yeah with speakers in the helmet and earplugs I can still hear sirens etc completely fine. And the music can be paused with a press of a button if needed.

I'm not a rider but this thought is shared by my Dad who has been a rider for 35 years...

Surely when riding on today's roads, it is a bad idea to have any distraction of the sort? It could seriously distract you and damage your awareness.

Its no more dangerous than riding a pushbike while listening to music, your more prone to hitting a pedestrian in a car than on a bike

How much being distracted listening to music while riding/driving is debatable I suppose

Of course it is more dangerous than listening to music on a pushbike!!!

Not that I'd necessarily recommend that either.

I know where your coming from,I'm just saying if its dangerous for bikers its dangerous for all forms of driving IMO

It depends on how distracting it is

Not really, so many idiotic pedestrians on cycling paths, I hate those running marathons especially. Once I nearly crashed because an idiot though it would be a good idea running on the wrong side and close to the edge so you can only see him when he's 2 meters away...

I listen to music on longer rides, it distracts me less than boredom which you get after 1 hour of riding in traffic. On a 125 when traffic is moving quicker there's no power to overtake... grrr  :(

BTW Ace, how's the polo doing?

Music (and earplugs) don't block out all sound - it's not like sitting at home with music full blast on your headphones. It's exactly like having a car stereo on - you can still hear everything else over/with the music.

People who don't wear earplugs sometimes think that they block out 100% of noise, when in fact they make hearing sirens/cars etc easier because all it cuts out is the wind noise.

I can hear ambulance sirens etc. with music on and earplugs in well before they're within visible range.

Bikers tend to use all their senses more than car drivers, and use sight a hell of a lot more than most car drivers. I'm always checking mirrors, thinking what that car is doing behind me, has he seen that I'm braking, spotting brake lights from cars round bends further up the roads etc. etc. all while the yummy mummy on the school run is dealing with a 6 year old having a tantrum, while texting on the phone and doing her makeup... :p

how's the polo doing?

139,300 on the clock, strange whining/chattering sound coming from the gearbox, strange squeaking noise coming from front somewhere, strange rattling sound coming from rear suspension.

Not doing toooooo well, but it passed its MOT... :p

As a note of slightly more relevance, the only time I crashed it months and months ago, I was listening to music and talking!

And I suppose the music was more of a distraction than the person next to you with whom you were chatting (or even worse, on the phone to)...?

The person I was talking to was more of a distraction than the music was, I was just trying to keep the post vaguely relevant to the thread. :p

Could never get comfortable ear phones/buds and I can't really stand blocking out noise from around me. Light ear plugs that take the edge off of the wind is about as far as I go.

I don't find music distracting, if anything it sorta stops that part of my brain from thinking too deeply or daydreaming both of which are distracting. That being said listening to talk radio probably isn't wise since that is occasionally a bit distracting if something engaging is being discussed.
