OK this may sound like a really dumb question but please bear with me.

Do you need a CPU installed in order to get into the BIOS?

Reason i ask i have a prob with booting up, nothing comes up on the screen and i'm trying to work out if its a CPU or motherboard issue.

With the CPU installed i turn on the computer everything powers on i hear the hard disk startup and the CPU fan starts. But i hear no beep and nothing comes up on the screen.

When i turn it on without a CPU installed the same thing happens.

So does this sound like a CPU fault?

cheers

yeah thats what i figured,

so judging by that would you say my problem is cpu or motherboard related?

or is there really no way to tell?

this sounds patronising, but is the cpu of the right socket?.. my friend once tried to install the wrong cpu into a mobo, and obviously it didnt work..

First things first have you got the speaker connected to the mobo properly?
Well there is a speaker connected but i guess it could be damaged... i can try and use another speaker.

nah not patronising at all, but the cpu is the right socket, the pc as been working fine for over a year its just suddenly come up with this prob and i dont know why

well its not the ram (i assume thats what you mean) since i tried a couple of different sticks.

Sound like it could be a dead mizzlebizzle.
you mean the motherboard? you reckon getting a new one will fix the prob?
I dont mind buying a new one, just dont want to buy one then find out the problem is the chip!

motherboards tend to blow before cpu's in my experience (i've never had a dead cpu), had about 3 motherboards die (or DOA)
