Do you need a passport to go to ireland?

As far as I'm aware, legally you just need approved photo ID to travel within the EU.

Well I'v seen fellow Greeks about to use their ID cards, but I'v never seen them actually passing through the imigration officer with one, so hey.

Lets clear this one up.

I used to work for Ryanair on checkin at STN.

To fly to Ireland you require photo ID but not necessarily a passport. However, different airlines accept different forms of ID. The least you can fly with on Ryanair is a photo driving license but this only applies to the UK and Ireland.
Photo ID does NOT mean anything with a picture (student cards etc). You will be turned away.

Anywhere else in Europe requires a passport as the UK is NOT a schengen state.

Best to get yourself a passport though mate, maybe not for this trip but for any future trips.

FYI, as of October, you need to attend an interview to get a passport, which should be a lovely way to slow the whole process down. I'd apply for one anyway if I were you.

Ryanair requires just photo ID for Ireland and Northern Ireland. I always bring my passport just in case.

Flew to Cork last week from Birmingham. Photo driving licence only.

I have made several trips to Southern Ireland each year for the last three years.

I don't have a passport.

I would advise that you check Terms and conditions of your airline.

I fly over to shannon from prestwick at least 4 times a year. The wife comes from their, so we go over to visit family. Ryan Air always accept my driving license as ID. But I think it only ryan air and aer lingus that do this.

Thanks for the replies :) It was either between dublin or edinborough - I need a passport for the summer so Im going to send off for one, I THINK the airline was ryanair, but i cant be 100%, so probably best to wait till summer for ireland and go to scotland for now just incase it wasnt ryanair and my mate books some tickets :(

Although that guiness factory does need a visit at some point mhmm...

Why bother flying?

Can get a train to Holyhead and subsequently jump on the 1hr ferry to Dublin for about £30.

Yep and as I said on the previous page, UK or Ireland is whatever the airline will accept in terms of ID (eg: Ryanair accept a lot less than easyJet so it is always best to check), whereas if you are from the UK and go into the EU then you WILL require a passport.

Money mainly, live like 5 mins drive from Birmingham International so getting a plane no problem, easier than a train and a ferry, quicker and cheaper (possibly) plan now is to go in summer, although I wudnt have minded going sooner :( Might give them a call and see what the operator says as it seems a bit hit and miss

If I aint being an idiot, although being 75% drunk... flying to either does not require a passport only photographic ID (100% sure)...... and flying Ryanair also helps which flys from a few major Airports from without the UK (again 100% sure)..... While having a full UK Passport does have its advantages... it not fully required for travelling to these locations......
