Do you still have to choose between crossfire and 3D or can you have both on one machine?

Do you still have to choose between eyefinity and 3D or can you have both on one machine?

Hi there people, the title says it all really, buy I couldn't decide weather to go three monitors or get one big 27" that has 3D.

I thought oh well what if I get my first monitor in 3D and then the other 2 after not in 3D and then can have 3D and eyefinity but then I remembered you cant put ati and nvidia cards together and ati has eyefinity technology and nvidia has 3D technology.

Or am I wrong, have things changed? can both cards do both yet or do we have to choose one or the other, eyefinity or 3D.

Thanks in advance.

And you can do eyefinity and 3D, but you would need to get the Samsung 3D monitors.

Or, if you went Nvidia, you could get 3D surround (though only if you went SLI)

Would 3x 3d monitors even "work"? I don't mean in a physical sense, but in "oh that looks horrible I'm going to throw up" sense.

Well I meant I wanted three monitors for eyefinity but then just use one of them for 3D games...so when I fancy playing a game in 3D I just use the middle monitor and when I fancy playing a different game in eyefinity I can switch to that mode instead.

i've got 3 3D monitors ;)

Might aswell use all 3 TBH ;)

But yeah, that's possible

You're looking at massive hardware demands if you plan to play games on 3x1080p screens in 3D, for example 2x6950s struggle with BC2 on medium to high settings (by which I mean it runs at lower than 60fps most of the time), and that's without 3D enabled.

Unless you're prepared to spend silly amount of money on graphics cards (and a power supply to match) I would not recommend it.

My advice: Go for one or the other - 1 screen with 3D or 3 screens Eyefinity.

A hybrid of both like you suggested could work, but you may be shocked at how demanding these visual perks can be.

I didnt say I wanted to play on 3 monitors in 3D....I said I wanted eyefinity and 3D but not at the same time. I want both on one PC rather then have to buy two PC's.

So when I want to play a game in 3D the middle screen would be used and the other two turned off, and then other games like battlefield I'd play with three screens without 3D.

Also I read post on this forum and I've seen people say they enjoy playing with three screens, and others saying they enjoy playing in 3D so I just thought well wouldnt it be good to have both?

But can ATI and Nvidia graphics cards play do both these days? can both cards play games with three monitors or 3D? Because it used to be the fact that you had to go ATI for three screens or Nvidia for 3D?

Can someone link me a graphics card from ATI and from Nvidia from OCUK website that can be used for 3D or for eyefinity (three screens) please?

I know exactly what you mean SkScothegg, i think some people in here are getting a little confused.

I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing as i just purchased a Samsung 3D 27" monitor and was thinking in the future of getting 2 more 2D monitors to run eyefinity when i didnt feel like using 3D.

Either Nvidia or Ati is capable of what you want.

With Nvidia you need 2 graphics cards to run a "surround" setup (three screens). And then you use 3D Vision when you want 3D on the middle screen (you have to set middle as primary monitor).

With Ati you can use a single graphics card to power three monitors (by displayport). And then when you want to use 3D you can use Tridef or iZ3D drivers on the middle screen.

My monitor, the Samsung S27A950D is made for use primarily with Ati cards and comes bundled with the Tridef software.

Cheers mate, I have a clear understanding of how this all works now. :D

Just to go into a little more detail and clarify a few points from my previous post.

With Nvidia their 3 screen solution is called "Surround". This requires two graphics cards to do. Their 3D solution is called 3D Vision.

For 3D with Nvidia you can use any 3D monitor that has no bundled glasses (you then purchase 3D vision seperately) OR any 3D monitor that comes bundled with 3D vision.

With Ati their 3 screen solution is called Eyefinity, this only requires a single graphics card. They provide 3D via Tridef and/or iZ3D (seperate companies, but Tridef work closely with Ati).

With Ati you can only use a 3D monitor that comes bundled with its own 3D glasses that are NOT 3D Vision. Currently only the Samsung 23" and 27" 3D monitors.

Either setup the 2D monitors can be any you like.

Now the advantages of Nvidia for your specific needs outlined here are that you have a larger choice of 3D monitors to choose from.

The advantages of Ati for this specific kind of setup are that you only need 1 graphics card (better make it fairly powerful though!).

The 3D experiance is similar with either setup.

Now there are a few caveats to all of this, but i won't start trying to confuse you here, what i have said above is the way it works with "out the box" products.

But the monitor does all the 3D conversion so it's fone ;)

The built in 3D conversion is a cool little feature, but it pales in comparison to real 3D solutions such as Tridef, 3D Vision and iZ3D.

Seriously, its so far away from the real thing.
